Hi there BrendaK,

It is not that you would not be able to access most of the park with a sedan, it’s just that when the roads do carry heavy traffic the roads tend to become very corrugated and not very comfortable for sedan vehicles, even with rain storms we had yesterday and then all the water in the roads it is a bit difficult.

This week alone I have note over a dozen sedan vehicles in the park.
There are areas whereby the shoulder of the road is a bit too high for a sedan vehicle to have great game viewing opportunity.

With a sedan you would easily reach Nossob, Mata-Mata and the two dune roads. I have not seen one sedan vehicle actually pulling up at the technical department but mainly the 4x4 vehicles.

Take it slow and the Kalahari will reveal itself to you.

Which camp do you recommend?

I've always visited KTP in a sedan (1992 Toyota Corolla; 2007 VW Polo; 2010 Ford Fiesta) and apart from the corrugations (which don't bother me much, but then I'm driving a hired car ) and the fact that some of the verges are a bit high, I've not had any problems. The only two camps that require a 4x4 are Bitterpan and Garaghab.

While there are endless 'discussions' about which type of vehicle is 'better' for KTP, I visit in a sedan because for me, as a solo traveler, the considerably higher cost of a 4x4 is more than I'm willing to spend. I'd rather budget for more nights in the park. As well, I prefer being on 'eye level' with the animals, rather than looking down on them from above. And I've rarely felt that I've missed anything because of the sedan's lower profile.

So don't be detered from visiting just because you don't have a 4x4!

Thank you Arks - which camp do you recommend? When visiting KNP I always try and book accommodation in the more rustic camps. I am 9 out of 10 times also a solo traveler, now and again I am forced to share my escape to tranquility with a family member or friend.

the direct road -Twee Rivieren to Nossob- (via Nossob river or east side) is only for 4x4...
and like KG said, for some part of the park a sedan is too low... we have to climb on the roof... and it's not allowed
but no problem for the roads

When do you intend to visit ?

Twee Rivieren is the only camp with 24 hour electricity and a restuarant. It also has a shop and a garage, as do Nossob and MataMata. The wilderness camps have no facilities at all -- apart from the accommodation of course.

It is not a matter of when do I want to visit, it is a matter of when can I get a booking - that is why I am nagging about the camp.

Are the wilderness camps accessible with a sedan? I am not really one for the bright lights etc.

Ok -- now we're on the same page

All the camps on the SA side, except Gharagab and Bitterpan, are accessible with a sedan

And no bright lights in KTP -- even Nossob and Mata Mata have 'lights out' at 10

Thanks P@m now I have an idea of where to start. Don't you think lights out at 10 is a bit late?

On a serious note

Do you think I can do Kalahari Tented Kamp to Nossob to Grootkolk?

Per the Kgalagadi site "Vehicles which will be using any of the 4x4 routes in the park must note that the recommended ground clearance should be 30cm to 45cm, to make the drive more enjoyable"

I have been wondering if this is correct for while and now decided to ask the question.

There are not many standard 4x4 vehicles with that ground clearance. The Land Cruiser 76 series (23cm) and Jeep Wrangler(25cm) for example.

Is this info per the info page correct ?

Hollebollegys, it should be OK to go with any 4x4 with Low-range.

You see, there in the northern cape, the father always tells the son, "Son, this is 30cm" when it is actually only 15cm, from there the mistake.

The keyword is enjoyable
But all other 4x4 will do the trick
Even your sedan car
but less enjoyable

Bert, you realise that the OP was talking about the 4x4 routes in the park? I'm sure they would be less enjoyable in a sedan car

They dont remove the hats, cause they are there to cover the ears. Hence "Blikore"

We did the Gharagab road in a Suzuki Grand Vitara which has a ground clearance of 200mm without any problems. I don't know about the 4X4 "Trails" though.
