Hi, an interesting little thread! My list is currently on 446...unfortunately still no Pennant-winged Nightjar, Kruger bogey bird of note!!!!

Just found this...........will get my list out and sort our my "just Kruger" sightings!!

Up to 313. Added Cape Wagtail & White-backed Duck at Leeupan and African Goshawk & Lesser Swamp-Warbler at Skukuza.

Wow JoelR, those two records for leeupan are brilliant, haven't seen White-backed Duck in Kruger before, do you mind sharing a bit about the sighting, I'm gona be there in about 10 days time. Was it just one individual?

Hi johnd. It was a group of about 10 wb ducks, with one wf duck nearby for comparison. They were continuously feeding by diving under for brief moments. Back home I looked on the SABAP2-distribution and realized how rare they are in Kruger, but at the time I didn't bother to take a pic because the light was bad...

Regarding your visit in about 10 days time: I saw the wb ducks on 12/5, but couldn't find them again two days later. The Cape Wagtails (2) I only saw during my second visit.

I did consider that I maybe mis-IDd the ducks due to the bad light, but I can't see how birds of that small size, with their typical 'low-to-the-water-floating' appearance and diving behaviour could be anything else. There were also plenty juvenile wf ducks around to compare. Any other duck that fits this description in your experiences, johnd?

Nah, that sounds pretty much spot on for White-backed Duck, there's not too many other birds to confuse them with, especially in Kruger so all there is to do now is cross fingers and toes and hope they stick about. The Tshokwane region has quite a few small water bodies so birds do move around there a lot, maybe I'll be lucky and they'll return. Will check for the Wagtail also, very good KNP bird!

Let me know if you find the ducks or the wagtails. There was a hungry looking African Harrier-Hawk prowling along the water edge so let's hope it doesn't have the wagtails for breakfast.

There are some serious good lists here for Kruger. I always thought that the mid 300's is a super total. Going into the 400's is just hardcore!

Please update my total to 288.
