Hi again seandi

Have sent you a PM with details of 2 places we have used - depends on how long you want to drive each day as to wether you want Brandvlei or Keimoes - both STUNNING in different ways. We do sometimes do the drive home in 1 day - leave as the park gates open ( especially in summer when they open at 5.30) and just go but its much nicer to break the journey .... also hate driving at night as the road from Upington to Askham is littered with dead animals from people driving at night - we counted 11 dead bat-eared foxes on the way up - absolutely AWFUL and such a waste!!!

There are still roadworks on Piekernierskloof Pass between Piketburg and Citrusdal but they werent too bad - only 2 reasonably quick stop/go's BUT they are ripping up the road between Calvinia and the turnoff to Brandvlei as well as a section of the road till Brandvlei - about 50km of roadworks with 6 stop/go's and they are loooooong ones  Might be better when you go though :wall:

I would rather stay at Keimoes as it is closer to the park, so day two won't be that long to travel.
You can get up in the morning and there will be plenty of time to shop in Upington before you head of to KTP :D and be in time before gate closing time.
Keimoes are a lovely place to stay over. :wink Next to the orange river.

We follow the route advocated by Scouter, but leave at 2h00, and get to 2R well before closing time on the same day even with a shopping trip in Upington.

There are less trucks on the N7 as well.

Just remember KTP :naughty: does not support any late entry. :) Thought it might be good to be well informed when planning your trip. Rather save than sorry, as any thing can happen on the road.

I actually prefer the road straight up to Springbok, and then turn right to Pofadder, Kakamas, Keimoes etc. This is a longer route but a much more pleasant drive for me.
We normally break our journey with a stopover in Upington or at the Molopo lodge - that gets you to Twee rivieren nice and early and you still have most of the day to explore the park.

There are a number of very good B&B's in Upington - if you go to the Green Kalahari Website they can help you with accommodation as well.

Either way, enjoy your trip

Being retired and with all the time in the world, we always book the accommodation first, and then decide how long we want to take to get there!!!!

We took Scouter's route last year and stopped in Clanwilliam, Calvinia and Upington. It was during the spring flower season, so were really lucky to see some stunning roadside flowers from before Clanwilliam and way past Calvinia.

I am presuming your time will be limited so you will only want one overnight stop maximum.

We took Scouters route last time and enjoyed it so will do so again in June.
Last time stayed in Keimoes but will be staying on the river between Keimoes and Upington this time.
Has anyone any very recent info on road works?

Hi BDM CAPE TOWN

The roadworks I mentioned in my post were unfortunately the state about 2 weeks ago when we went up at the end of April, don't know how far along they will be in June - probably not much further :( We will be there again for a week from the 16th of June too - we might see each other perhaps ??

Road works update. We went to KTP last week.
There are roadworks on the pass before Citrusdal and at least 4 stop / go's between Calvinia and Brandvlei and looking at the road markings there are going to be 6 to 8 of them before long. That said, we didnt wait long and as I tend to travel at 110 it did not delay us too much on the way up or the return.
We stayed at Oranjerus, about 30km Keimoes side of Upington (South Side of river just past Kanonieland).
Stunning campsite, with lawns, good ablutions and a deck and returant on rivers edge.

I am thinking of booking an 1115 flight from Upington to JNB pretty soon
Is that reasonable coming from Twee Rivieren?
I know driving time is about 2 1/2 hours but how long will it take for the gas station to reinflate the tires to the correct pressure?
I want to factor that wait time into my schedule
Thanks

We have done the TR to Upington airport in both summer and winter and have made it with more than enough time to spare.

Enjoy!

You need to check in 10am latest if I remember right, so you would probably have to leave the park by 07h30. Not sure when you are going to the park but it doesn't leave you much time - possibly a trip up to Leeudril and back if you are there in winter (depending on gate opening times).
What we did was check in at the airline counter and then checked the car in.....saved us a few minutes!!
