The place where ranger Healeys dog Mary succumbed to heat exhaustion .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

ndloti, :) this is quite a tough one    Sounds interesting and would love to hear the story behind your question.

 picnic, help me out here   I found the name of a river near Skukuza - "Injayamatepe" a tributary of the Sabie River, "Inja" I am convinced is an african name for dog. However I cannot find a river with that name near Skukuza. Maybe my book is a bit outdated  Will have to do some more research on this one

Just had a look in another of my books and according to New Dictionary of South African Place Names by Peter E Raper
INja kaMthephe - Watercourse in the Kruger National Park, some 5km west of Skukuza, a tributary to the Sabie. The name is Swazi for “Mthephe dog”. Mthephe was the nickname of a ranger, GR Healy, whose dog, Mary, died and was buried there by him with full honours and a granite tombstone. Healy was fond of wearing a cap, which led to his acquiring the nickname.

Very different spelling - but still can't find it on the map :wall: :wall:

 Correct , Rosemary , according to "Neem Uit Die Verlede" by the late Dr U de V Pienaar (ex warden of the KNP) & co authors, the place where ranger Healey's dog Mary died is near the junction of the S1 & S4,though the precise location was not actually marked after the headstone was moved to the dog cemetery at Skukuza.
The place where Mary collapsed before dying is on this koppie opposite where the S4 joins the S1.
