Any idea what kind of mongoose this might be?
I've been up and down this forum and on google,
but can't come up with an ID. :wall:

Seeing that it is still early night, maybe a lrge grey mongoose?
Or a Meller's?
Or...?

Howzit Lionspoon,

99% sure this is a Meller's mongoose, which is quite similar to the White-teailed mongoose. Its not a large grey mongoose as was mentioned. LGM dont occur there and they are much bigger (1m or more in length). I am not 100% sure of Meller's Mongoose distribution but I know they are seen from time to time in a private reserve some 50 or so km from Satara and thats where ive seen mine so I would imagine they would be there too.

o-dog, thanks so much for your reply!
I'll go with Meller's then and we had a sighting at Satara before
so I think it's safe to assume that they indeed occur in that area. 8)

 ...my sighting was also 30mins after sunset so the timing would be right. A real great species and although so many people dream about pangolins, aarvarks and aarwolfs, this little guy is almost as rare!

We saw him on the road, early in the morning, in the Berg.

Beautiful clear photo Sharifa!

Having recently discussed these 2 animals A-M suggested, extensively, I would say it is more probably a large grey Mongoose, even though it appears very wet.

This is a photo we took recently at a bird spot near our house - it is definitely a water mongoose and you can see the difference.

Hi all.

I am brand new to this forum and just love reading all the comments. The little antelope is a common duiker for sure. The little tail as well as the pre-orbital gland gave it away.

Hi Roan,

Welcome to the forum! Good start with your ID...it just amazes me how so many people dont know how to ID a duiker, one of our most common antelopes. I guess people just take them for granted that they never actually look at them properly and the one day they do, they look confusing. Guess they are usually running and jumping away.

Radman you are only saying it looks like a mountain reedbuck because of the fact that Pretoriouskop is a hotspost for them. Its incidentally also a great area for duiker. You will see from a reference book that this is as different as an impala and springbok.
