The white breast had me confused because my bird book pics didn't show that much white. Now I know it's a morph - thanks!

Please can I have some help with the ID of this raptor seen in Kruger in Feb this year.
Maybe a pale Wahlberg's?
The bird was quite some distance away so this was the best we could get at full zoom.

Probably because the OP has seen a lanner before, but a hobby would be a lifer :D

Seriously, a Eurasian Hobby would have rufous on the leggings. I agree, its a lanner.

Looks like the move to the garden route has done wonders... :twisted:

Lanners are not uncommon in Kruger... they should probably seen as frequently as the Eurasian hobby.

Just looking at the legs, it appears that the ankles, and possibly the rest of the leg (hidden) are naked. Normally the boot extends all the way down to the feet in the aquila eagles, which would possibly rule out booted. Have you considered one of the buzzards? Step or perhaps a young Jackal... Do have any pictures of the front of the bird to get a better ID.

Tell tale signs of a Booted Eagle is missing here lacking the distinct shoulder patches and like Adrian said, the feather's running down the leg.

My opinion is that it is a Juvenile Jackal Buzzard.

The overall bulkiness of the bird is more buzzard like than harrier. The body shape of a bird helps to put it intothe correct family group. With raptors, particularly juveniles, colour can be very variable and thus unreliable.

When was this picture taken? Winter would exclude a steppe buzzard.
