Now ... the long saving for the rest.

Also could someone suggest a suitable telephoto lens of 70- 200 or 70 - 300mm for my kit and would you need to stay with Canon for a flash unit?

Canon Rocks -

As a flash I would suggest the Canon 580 EX II. Works like a charm, and is usually quite correct with the amount of light sent out.

For a lens I would very much suggest saving a bit longer if you can. The 100-400 has a better reach for Kruger, KTP and all other parts, and is quite sharp. I have been using it for almost 8 years now, and it has never let me down, and I can even bird with it.

Congratulations on a great kit - I hope it gives you a lot of enjoyment (just make sure you make lots of photos)

As regards the two telephoto zooms you mention - the 70-200 is currently available new in 5 different models and the 70-300 in 3 different models ranging in price from about R6000 to R24000 but are all (specially the L models) fantastic lenses. However, for wildlife photography in the KNP I would fully support DQ's recommendation of the 100-400 as an extremely versatile lens with a bit more reach than the models above while retaining good IQ.

thank you. i think a little more saving and time will pay off well to getting the whole kit.........eventually.

I've just upgraded from a Panasonic Lumix FZ50 (which got me some great pictures in KNP last August) to a

Nikon D7000

18-105 VR lens
70-300 4.5-5.6 G AF-S lens

and saving up for a

Sigma 150-500 for a bit of extra reach.

Welcome Steve and happy learning. You have acquired one of the best DX DSLR cameras currently available (if not the best ) and I hope you get as much joy out of yours as I do from mine

Thanks Scottm, yeah i'm still getting to grips with it, but having great fun, unfortunately not gonna be able to use it in KNP until August 2013, but by then i should at least know what i'm doing.

I have the same kit, but I found that the 70-300mm wasn't good enough for some parts in Kruger(missed length)...and are looking for a bigger lens now.

My options are :

Sigma: 50-500mm or 150-500mm
Sigma 500mm F4.5 if I can find a second hand one...

Why did you choose the 150-500mm instead of the 50-500mm? The 50-500mm seems to be a better lens.

Hey Vinkie, sorry for not replying earlier.

i'm pretty new to this so all advice is greatfully recieved.

i'm looking at the Sigma 150-500 over the 50-500 as it seemed like focal range might be asking too much of the latter lens. I'd read some reviews of the 50-500 i think it was referred to as the 'Bigma' and the reviews were not so good.

if there's a new one one (50-500) on the market, i'll check it out.
