Allen's Gallinule

Unread postby Lizet Grobbelaar » Tue Mar 09, 2010 6:03 pm

Allen's Gallinule Porphyrio alleni

I Photographed this breeding male at Kgomo-kgomo.

They are smaller than Purple Swamphen, and have this blue shield(male) or green shield (female).
The reddish legs distinguishes them from the American Purple Gallinule with the yellow legs.
The bill is all red without the yellow tip as the American Purple Gallinule.

There use to be a breeding pair at Lake Panic but we have not seen them for two years now.

In wet years (e.g. 2009, but not this year) they are not uncommon in the vleis and pans between the Luvuvhu and Limpopo Rivers.

I saw the pair at LP in Jan 2008.
