The barb on a porcupine's quill makes it very difficult to extract once it penetrated the attacker.

True, the barbs are designed so that the quill enters the porcupine's attacker as far as possible. A side-effect of this is indeed that the barbs make it difficult to remove the quills without snapping the quill inside of you.

Porcupine quills are sharp as needles. Unlike needles, quills have backwards facing barbs that catch on the skin making them difficult to extract.
