Dino you must try a walk  they are amazing!!! This month I did the napi wilderness trail and never once felt that I was in any danger, even though our guides did at one point herd us behind a dense thicket when we were near a rhino calf and mother. They are very well trained and know exactly what they are doing

And as mentioned before, they seem to have this oddly fascinating, perfect combination of telescopic night vision :hmz: :D

When it comes to the animals they are aware of you long before you are aware of them most of the time. On the walk our guide kallie spotted two male lion 450m where you had to look with binoculars to see anything more than a blob. They were definitely aware of us already and kept a constant watch.

At night the cats become a bit braver, as evidenced by the leopard who took his early morning meal of impala a couple metres from my tent, a metre or two from the small fence. He did not run away even after I clumsily exited my tent trying to see what was making a crunching noise (originally thought it was an elephant chewing bark). Did not spot him in my sleepy state but saw the evidence of the kill on the way back from our morning walk  (also the crunching continued after I went back to my tent).

Dear KNP Lovers,

My wife and I were able to get a lot of information from this site before visiting Kruger Park this past spring/summer.
So I figured I should create and post a short YouTube video to share with others on the San Parks forum.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIfxQaLe4qY

We were in Kruger for about one month and were able to participate in six of the wilderness trails.
We started on the Wolhuter Trail on June 1st and then did the Metsi Metsi Trail, Sweni Trail and two back-to-back trips on the new Mphongolo Backpacking Trail, which was fantastic!
We finished things off with a trip on the Nyalaland Trail near the end of June.

Thanks to our amazing guides and all the fantastic staff at Kruger for making this such a memorable trip.
We will be back!

Thanks guys. Glad you enjoyed it. I know how much my wife enjoyed seeing other people's photos and videos of Kruger before we visited, so it's the least we can do.

The artist is Miriam Makeba. Bought her CD in Khayelitsha Township near Cape Town, but I'm sure you can find her stuff pretty much anywhere. Being from Canada I had never heard of her before, but apparently in Africa she is fairly well know!?

Hi All,

I am booked on the Olifants Wilderness Trail (not the back-packing trail) next year and wonder if anyone has any advice. We come out to Kruger every year, and although we have done some of the morning walks from the restcamps, this is the first time we have taken the plunge and booked a Wilderness trail. What inspired us to do this was a TV programme on the Wolhuter trail which was shown on the BBC a while back. Well now we have made our decision, I was wondering if the forumites might have any suggestions on what we might expect, or if anyone can offer any general advice? The only slight apprehensions we have are:
a) How to deal with the heat in Jan/Feb (especially at night in the hut with no aircon)
b) Will there be any fridge space in the Wilderness Camp to store a couple of tinnies to drink by the fire at night?
c) I have read about poaching activity in the area. Have there been any incidents of encounters with poachers? The wildlife encounters are what we look forward to, but the possibility of encountering a poacher while on foot is another matter altogether.

Any tips or advice are always much appreciated

Have a look here - there is more trail specific info further down the page :

viewtopic.php?f=133&t=281

http://www.sanparks.org/tourism/activities/

a) Heat - a facecloth kept wet and applied to the neck works for me . Sprinkle water on the sheets .
b) There is a gas fridge for cooldrinks . Providing fellow trailists are considerate there is sufficient space for at least 2 - 340 ml six packs per person . There is allways a large cooler box full of ice provided .
c) Poachers will avoid any activity , there is little chance of encounters . Besides that poaching is not that prevalent (yet) .

Olifants has the most scenic setting of all the trails . Any questions are welcome .

It is very difficult to give sound advice without a thorough knowledge of your likes , expectations etc .

Have a look at the various individual wilderness trail threads under "Activities & Sightings" , once you have an overview you are welcome to PM me for further advice .

The structure & routine of each trail is allmost identical , each one is worth doing .

Hello there
Ndloti is the one to ask as he knows them all so well .
We have been on three (bushmans, Sweni, and Nyalaland)all super and all slightly different.
On all the trails we have had single people and in no time they are part of the group.
All the trails have comfy beds , flush loos and hot/cold showers. None of the trails are too taxing physically ( we come under the eldery bracket here ) and all our trails have mixed age groups ,on the last one the eldest was 70 and the youngest 12 !!
Do go ahead and book you wont regret it

Now is the time to embark on a wilderness trail - I have never yet seen such a low booking rate .
