Great video!

Where do you get all your music for your video because I would love to use some on mine. If that's ok.

but its amazing how in the last scene you don't even realize that the leopard is there

Jackal kills Springbock in KTP

Unread postby Afkpuz » Mon Jan 30, 2012 4:21 pm

Good day everyone!

I returned from a trip to KTP on Friday and wanted to share an unusual sighting we had on January 23rd, just 8km south of the lower Dune Road.

We had stopped another car earlier and the driver told us that there was an injured springbock being harassed by a jackal further down the road, so went to have a look.

Upon arrival, we immediatly saw the springbock and the jackal that attacked him. The antelopes hind legs were all bloody, the jackal was ciricling its prey, trying to bite the legs.

After a while the springbock went to the ground and the jackal was on him and started feeding from the rear end immediatly.

Five minutes later he stopped and left the springbock alone, probably waiting for it to die. We stayed next to them for appr. 2 hrs and had to witness the death struggle. We then decided to take a break an went to the next waterhole. When we returned 30 minutes later, the jackal had dragged the poor thing further down into the riverbed and finally killed it.

The whole scene was a cruel thing to watch, but also quite interesting.

I took a lot of photos and some video footage which i´d like to share:

Wonderful sighting -- but not for the faint-hearted.

Was the jackal alone the whole time or did it have help ?

Thanks for sharing

Thanks,

indeed, not for the faint hearted...

There wa another jackal around, but he never took part in the kill and didn´t eat from the springbock.

cheers,

Denis

What a great sighting and also great video and pics Afkpuz
Amazing that the second Jackal never joined in to help, maybe the Jackal killing the Springbok was the dominant male :hmz:
It also would be interesting what caused the injuries at the Springbok in the first place, I don't think it was done by the Jackal..

Afkpuz,

Years back I watch a video at the information office in Twee Rivieren about a similar incident. Not nice to watch at all and the jackal had the same approach from behind.

Cannot say what injured to the springbok's leg but one can just think what will happen to animals that got slightly injured by a car, when driving to fast, and not killed on impact.
