 Sorry, you are right

Go for 21, 22 or 23. If I remember correctly, nr 22 is a good choice :hmz:

You will enjoy Tamboti, my favourite is nr 40, but it is so popular, have not been able to stay there for the last 4 years.

Hey tent dweller,

We requested specific safari tents for our trip to Tamboti in September last month. I emailed Tinyiko Mtsetwene (tinyiko.mtsetwene@sanparks.org) who responded within a couple of hours saying that my request had been successful.

Hope that helps and you get the tent that you want!

Brief update on my visit so far. We had to evac from Maroela day before yesterday - yes, the Timbavati burst it's banks and flooded into the campsite along the fence. Not much damage though but in Tambotie ten tents as well as part of the fence washed away. Some people stayed overnight at a college camp close by, we where lucky to get one of the chalets at Orpen.

We left our caravan on higher ground for the night (in the middle of the road just where the road split to Tambotie) and got to Orpen via a back road guided by Richard (the section ranger). Some once-in-a-lifetime phodies will follow in my trip report when we get back in 11 days time. This morning Maroela was still very wet and the duty manager recommended we move to Satara where it will be safer.

Did that and took a drive out to see the damage done at Tshokwane - truly unbelievable.

Chat again soon

Dear All,

Due to 18 January 2012 floods, Tamboti Tented Camp extensively damaged with about half of the 40 tents with flood damage - yes those views will certainly be different. Somehow sad to me as I was very involved during the planning and construction phase and this was a product we were proud of! I am confident the renewed tents will again be attractive and popular!

Kind regards.

Dear All,

My apologies for the confusion and mixed messages. The information I have is as follows:

1. Repairs to services are underway and are planned to be completed by mid March 2012. This includes fencing, the gate, water, sewerage & electricity, as well as roads in the camp.
2. Once this has been completed, the camp will reopen.
3. Tents 1 to 20 have been damaged to such a degree that they will require significant work or replacement of tent and/or deck and this will take a few months.
4. Once opened (planned by mid-March) tents 21 to 40 will reopen. Keep in mind 21 to 30 are budget and 31 to 40 are the ones with bathroom and kitchen en-suite.
5. Therefore two thirds of the budget tent bookings have to either be moved or cancelled.
6. Booked guests between dates 19 March and 31 May 2012 will therefore be contacted in due course. Guests with bookings for CTT2 and CTT4 (budget) tents within this period are welcome to try to find alternative accommodation on their own initiative, if they prefer.
7. Yes, the camp was closed on the system until 31 July 2012. This will be reviewed as the re-construction progresses.
8. No booking that is cancelled due to flood damage will incur cancellation or amendment fees and in cases where guests cannot be assisted with alternative accomodation to their satisfaction or there is no alternative accommodation, the Tamboti component will be cancelled and guest refunded (into their SANParks account or otherwise).
9. Guests will be required to pay the difference in cases where more expensive accommodation is agreed upon and will be refunded in cases where cheaper accommodation is agreed upon.
9.Based on the above, guests with LST3 and LST3Z tents, being the bathroom and kitchen en-suite ones from 31 to 40 with bookings from 19 March 2012 will not be affected or need to be moved.
Queries on the above can be forwarded to joep.stevens@sanparks.org

Kind regards.

JOEP

Dear RoseH,

Tamboti is planned to be fully operational by beginning June, so you are welcome to book there, should there be availability. There is also budget accommodation available at Lower Sabie, Pretoriuskop, Letaba, Skukuza(tents), Crocodile Bridge (tents) and Balule (in the southern half). However the setting at Tamboti is hard to beat, so best of luck!

Kind regards.

Dear All,

I visited the site recently (first time since 18 January flood) and the camp looking great. Of the 40 tents, 28 are being used and 12 still being worked on for opening by 15 June 2012. Riverview has changed somewhat with no or little vegetation in the riverbed. It is a great place!

Hubby phoned me one day this last week to ask: "Do you feel like going to Tamboti 11 - 15 July?"

DUHHHH! :P

So our booking is made.

A quick question though, since I have never stayed in one of the tents in Kruger before: Does it get very cold at night? Do I need to take a gas heater for the July nights in a tent?

Thanks!

Hi Tieroog
It gets very cold at night as the camp is next to the (dry)river bed. After sunset you will feel the drop in temperature.
There should be enough extra blankets in the wardrobe. Check before housekeeping lock up and go, otherwise you might be sorry.
We are going in August for the 3rd time, and manage with the bedding supplied.
Good luck with the trip.

I agree 100% with djf. Anything to keep warm. I am very cold sensitive and found that I needed more than an extra blanket.

In saying that, I would drop everything if I could be there, no matter what the temperature. The tents have become my favourite way of experiencing the Park.

Enjoy
