we followed them for some time

Image

they eventually moved off over the dune.....

no sooner than they were out of sight Hannes Lochner appeared .....

Roger said...not again...gave him bad news the other day...so he was off, and we were left with having to pass on bad news

disappointed and resigned to having missed another leopard sighting,
Hannes pointed at our yellow ribbons and said "what are those yellow lints for? Is it like aids day?"

And so I explained the forum to them..

Apparently Hannes' mission and focus was pics of leopards.....
his vehicle well equipped for wildlife photography...

At Kamqua there was a traffic jam.
Vehicles spaced out across the river on the upper dune road...in the middle of them all was Dr Gus and Margie Mills...

and just off the road in the shade of a small tree...

Elena !!!!!!!

At last we were to meet the legendary Dr Gus and re-aquantaince with Mrs Margie and to get some expert info....

Elena had 5, 1 month old cubs in a den 5 odd kms into the dunes..
she had caught a hare the previous day but a young leopard took it off her

There was a foal in the springbok herd that was grazing in the river

the next thing Elena was up....but then moved away from the road and along the top of the dune

Elena went and lay under a small tree on the dune (just in front of where the Mills were parked on the pic.

The Mills followed her turned and watched her. Dr had a fat lens on a camera ready to capture any action...

Image

Elena got up walked to the edge, checked out what was happening..

The Mills quickly drove to the river to get a view down the river...

Elena turned and went back to the tree...Mills followed

This happened about 3 times

We were parked off on the Auob river road in the shade of a tree watching the interaction.

A prisons dept bus came past, stopped and asked ...I told them about Elena

after a couple of minutes a young head popped out of the back window, a huge smile on his face,
and he gave me the

How could I not have shared this sighting??

The bus had pulled off the road, followed by a Land Cruiser with he bosses....

The Mata Mata game viewing vehicle approached, back full of staff, repremanded them about driving off the road.....

We again passed a-m and click click, in the evening, their sun set drive did not happen, probably because their vehicle was not there....

The herd was slowly moving down the river towards and past us, we could not see a foal in the herd.

Then a small bunch moved towards Elena and a small bush on the other side of the river...

and out popped a tiny new born foal

Image

it got the nudging treatment and then some milk

The herd moved a little further...Elena made her move, out of sight along the back of the dune....

The Mills were around and past us, Quannah and couple of other vehicles all moved along, getting what they believed would be the 'hit' area...

Sorry to disappoint but the last thing that my SO wants to see is a poor springbok being killed (even on TV when hunt starts, channel gets changed)

And so we stayed where we were.....

Dust, action, springbok charging down the river....before I could get a pic off

Image

Elena missed (so did I, it was all over by the time I got a pic off)

Image

She looked a sad sight as she made her way back over the dune....

Although we did not want to see the kill, we wanted to see her eat!! She needed food to feed those little ones.

Time to get back to MM the sun was starting to set.

We heard that she went far back, Dr Gus told others that she was now gone so they returned home, and Quannah returned to URI.

But another Uri tenant hung around as long as they could.

Elena reappeared ...... and then was tackled by a young leopard (Miera?)

he could not hang around...gate closing time :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

And so we were anxious to here news of her, that she was ok....she was, but sadly her litter did not make it...nor her next litter.... :( :( :(
