Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year!

I just finished my transects for the month yesterday and must admit I was amazed how quiet things were out there. We have had extreme temperatures of over 40 for the last week and everything was quiet, so quiet that some tourists actually asked where all the animals were. At Nossob we had some rain last night and is still overcast and very humid at the moment.

Steppe Buzzard sightings though has increased a little, as well as lots of raptor congregation at some waterholes like Polentswa. Vultures have been seen hiding under the shade of a tree and if I remember correctly I've counted a group of about 30 doing just that. I can only assume it is temperature related. The odd Kite here and there have also been spotted but not yet in the numbers I've observed last season. I have spotted a couple of Booted Eagles at Leeudril as well that was really nice to see.

Hope all is well and enjoy your weekend.

Happy Birding everyone :cam:

Hi Madel

Some interesting raptor sightings during the week 26th Dec to 2 Jan....

Dark morph of the Steppe buzzard..seen along the Auob.

Image

Booted Eagle flying over Craig Lockhart

Image

and a juvenile Lanner Falcon with kill..also at Craig Lockhart.

Image

Image

Although the Lanner was very adept at catching the dove it seem to battle to kill it and get on with eating it !!!

It seems there are quite a few immature martials in the park at the moment.

This one is from near Leeudril.

Halo

This secretarybird i photographed on the road between Rooiputs and Twee rivieren...
Image

There are juvenile Pale chanting goshawks at Cubetjie quap and if you turn of the car and listen for a while you might hear them calling the parents...I spent one whole afternoon with them and the behavior was amazing, the would call the Parent and after she/he has caught a Ground agama they would deliver it to them and after the meal has been finished they would clean up and take just sit in the tree and scan the Kalahari landscape....after a while there would be another meal delivered....
Image
This one had a great time jumping around on the dry bushes...

I just want to thank everyone that has posted and participated on this subject so far! Keep posting please! I really do appreciate it.

Just to let you all know that all the migrants have finally arrived last week and there is definitely some Amur Falcons among the Red-footed Falcons. If anyone can find some that will sit still for long enough to allow a picture being taken, please let me know.

 lots of birding to be done now!
Warm Nossob regards to you all

Nice pics Jan.

Your pygmy looks like a gabar goshawk.

Like the expressions on your owls.

1. "If you don't stop pointing that thing at me I'll peck your nose off!"
2. "O boy!, hurry up, I can't hold this pose forever...."
