We were on holiday in Plettenberg Bay for 2 weeks now, but last week I decided that I needed a quick Addo visit. I managed to get a chalet for the night of the 28th of December and we were set to go.

We left @ 4h30 on Wednesday morning and arrived at the South Gate 5 minutes before the offices opened at 7h00 for 2 wonderfull days. I'm so jealous of people like JJ and Ronnie who can do this on almost a weekly base.

Our first animals were a group of Zebra and Eland before we found 4 out of Addo's 9 Lions within our first hour in the park.

I don't think I can do a full Trip Report on 36 hours in Addo, but i will post photographs from the different animals we saw.

A few things that stands out from this visit is firstly that the park is in exellent condition after a very dry period a couple of years ago, the addition of the southern section made such a difference, the service of the staff is outstanding( Thank you, Vuyani for your friendly welcome and for knowing who I am after not been the park for more than a year) and then the second day (29 December) was the the bussiest day I've ever seen in Addo.

First Photos to follow shortly!

As you might know, the adult lions in Addo are all named.

The four that we saw were Gina (second generation female in Addo and about 6 years old), her 2 sub-adult sons(not named yet) and Nomad (about 5-6 years old and one of the 2 adult males in Addo).

They must have eaten good during the night as they were very relaxed and sleepy.

Our first animals that we saw on our first morning was a big group of Eland and Zebra.

We didn't see any big troops of Buffaloe this time, but only a few Dagga Boys. The second pic shows where the name comes from.

Lastly, a few pics from one of my Addo-favourites, The Kudu

The next instalment will cover a few Addo Birds.

Hi Henk,

What lovely photographs.
Would love to see more.

I'm not very knowlegeable tho trying to get better but I think your birds are
Agree with Noel - jackal buzzard
crowned lapwing
cape weaver
black headed heron
denham's bustard
red necked spurfowl

I'm sure one of the experts will put me right if any are wrong!

Thanx, Noel, Granjan and Hilda for your kind remarks.

Thank you also for the names of the birds. Heres one that I left out!

Thanx for your comments and for explaining the Dagga Boy, Rino.

Yes we had a great time and although it was short we did manage to see most.
We only missed the hyenas and I was the only one in the family to see the Black Rhino. My timing was just right as I decided to go to the lookout at the waterhole at the same time that the BR came for a drink. He (she?) was in the spotlight for only about 30 seconds.

Now I need help again. I was only once before in Addo in December and then it was very dry, so that could be the reason why I have not seen this plant before. It was mostly in the Northern park of the park.

It has only one long stem with flowers on top and no leaves. Can someone please give me more info on this plant.

Good to read another report on one of my favourite parks, Henk. Lucky you to see the black Rhino.
I think your bird might be a grey-brown form of the Steppe Buzzard, but I am no expert.
Your photos are stunning.
looking forward to more.
