Oh dear MM - You obviously don't get to the park as often as you would like to'

The S1 is the road main tarred road leading from Phabeni gate towards Skukuza -

Norms, spot on there

Massimo, big 5 is not easy in Kruger.

I have answered on one of your other posts, looking for Hyena.

Kruger has its own rhythm, its own music.

Norms, I am really a bit doff

I also think that I might have run that road in the Kruger half marathon.

But that is another story,

MM I feel the same as you do. I looked at my map book for hours to find the S1.
The S threw me. I looked at all the sand roads but never thought of looking at the tarred roads starting with a S.

We'll be going to Pretoriuskop for the first time in January this year. So the S1 is definitely on the list to be viewed. Any recent sightings there?

And an extra question - if you could choose - the drive between Pkop and Skukuza - S1 or H1-1?

Bushbuddies, I like both drives. If I had limited time I would probably take the S3 and join up with the Phabeni road. It is worth stopping for a moment at the Albesini ruins as well.

The S1 was exceptionally quiet the other day
But the terrain looks fit to host teeming wildlife! If I try it again I'll probably get a different result :D

Whisper it quietly, the S1 might just be one of the best roads in the whole Park

Earlier this year we entered at Phabeni and within an hour had seen hyaena, wild dog, lion and leopard!

There was another occassion, where the big five were all down before the H11 intersection.

Personally I prefer it to the H1-1, the grazing tends to be better, as the area around Pretoriuskop is sourveld.

If staying at Skukuza, I like heading out in the afternoon towards the S1, then heading up the S4 and along the S3 towards the Albasini ruins and then making a left turn down the S1 back to camp. That way the sun is at your back; ok you do get some traffic with people leaving, but the sightings have more than compensated for this :D It takes about 3 and half hours and gets away from the busier H4-1.

Be interesting to hear any other thoughts?
