 Sickle bush indeed.

But the "plaster" is not for human use.

Sickle bush "invades" areas of disturbance, such as over grazed areas, old agricultural areas, road verges, etc. They cover this up, preventing further disturbance, settles the ground and allow it to rest. By the time the Sickle bush has completed its life cycle the area has been "healed".

Humans see this as a problem, but actually the human impact was the r5eal problem.

Forestgump you are IT!

What tree is grown for timber in the indigenous forests of the Garden route N.Park, but does not belong ?

Thanks FG; I cannot afford yellowwood and stinkwood furniture (and actually have a thing about buying articles made from these ancient trees - it just seems wrong to cut them down), but the blackwood is a bit cheaper (and I don't mind using Aussie wood  ).

Many of the yellowwood and stinkwood trees in the Knysna Forests of the southern coastal area of South Africa are hundreds, and even thousands, of years old. These are national, protected treasures, yet their wood is also, to a limited degree these days, used for furniture and ornaments as the texture and colour is beautiful and attractive.

To prevent extinction of these slow-growing trees, explain what methods are used to harvest them such that their numbers are not depleted.

The rangers identify which trees are within 10 years of dying, or which are diseased and these are harvested.

Quote:
Interestingly, the indigenous forests are still harvested these days. A few times a year, those trees – which are within ten years of dying from old age or disease – are cut down carefully, and sold at an auction to wood merchants, who sell them to furniture manufacturers. I’m still not sure how much I agree with this…but the guys at SANParks assure me it’s done on a very carefully managed system, and it provides sustainable income to the area, which I think is great, as conservation in Africa won’t survive if it can’t provide benefits to the local communities.

Heres a question to get the quiz going again.

Most Stapeliads have foul smelling flowers, why is this?

This is an edumacated guess ...

To attract insects such as flies to assist them in fertilisation.

Correct Imberbe.
The scent their flowers produce is meant to resemble that of rotting meat, feces and other disgusting things which attracts flies which are their primary pollinators.

Over to you

In KNP the Delagoa thorn and multi stemmed false thorn (Albizia) is super abundant in a narrow band running up from Crocodile bridge gate (Gomondwane) just to the west of Lower Sabie, past Tshokwane and up to Timbavati. It is largely absent in the rest of the park.

There is a specific reason for this. What is this reason?

:hmz: does it have to do with the type of ground the tree prefers?
