Stark, you and I have much in common. A love of wilderness, wildlife, and Kruger top the list.

I hadn't seen that video before, but it brings a smile to my face, while also causing an aching in my heart. I too am awed by the bugle of a bull elk during the rut, I love the smell of our forests, and the peaceful solitude of a mountain trail. I cry over clear-cut hillsides, and litter lining roadsides and trails, and am saddened by the continual shrinking of our wild and scenic places.

Protecting wilderness to me is standing up to say no when others try to take it away, or use it for personal gain. It is saying yes when asked to pitch in with body and soul to save the places and things that we love. It is bending over to pick up the trash that someone else has tossed from their window. It is passing on stewardship and love of the land to the next generation. It is caring that after I am gone there will be the same wild and scenic places for the next person to experience.

Thank you Normana, I am pleased that you posted.

For me, conservation remains personal. It is my willingness to do and give what I can in my sphere of influence. It is the desire to spread love and respect for all life. Kruger is one place where people can once more feel awe in a wild space.

To me, protecting the wilderness means ensuring that the ecological balance remains uncompromised by Man's activities.

In our world this is often impossible which is why there are so few true wilderness areas remaining. Certainly in South Africa a very fine balance has to be maintained between the demands of our remaining 'wild' areas and the demands of the humans (and I mean ALL of us) that surround them. I understand the difficulties in this respect that any Nature Conservation body has in trying to maintain some kind of equilibrium between the two, even though I may not always agree with the methods used.

What I have more difficulty with is the acquiescent nudge given to the destruction of wild (and wilderness) areas by people who should know better because someone can make money out of removing natural resources that may have taken millenia to form. The excuse is usually that we need it somewhere, and of course it is going to cost a lot of money to recoup production costs and make a heavy profit; The irony is that the earth offers us so much in terms of energy for free, and we don't make good use of it, we'd rather spend lots of money to destroy and from that destruction produce, something we could have used wisely for nothing . . . .
