Marakele: Mbidi 4X4 route

Unread postby awie » Sat Oct 15, 2011 8:40 pm

We stayed at Tlopi and Bontle some years ago. We also covered the 4X4 route. Does anyone know whether the 4X4 trial has been changed lately or is it still the same.

Hi awie,

Welcome to the forum!

Which 4x4 route are you referring to?
I can't give you much info on the overnight route but we've done the one which is an extension of Mbidi loop (see map) a few times.
The route is still the same except that it seemed to have deteriorated slightly the last time. Marakele also had quite a bit of rain earlier in the year which played havoc on all the roads so I guess unless maintenance was done on the 4x4 route (which I doubt), you can expect a rather fun ride.
We'll be in Marakele 2 weeks time and we'll be doing it again. I'll make sure to come back with a proper report and pics. :)

I doubt it ...

Wanted to go down that route this weekend and it looks terrible. In fact, there is a no entry sign up at the moment.

Thanks for the info. If there is a no entry sign, I suppose it must be impassable. I will look out for your further information.

We are back from Marakele, a weekend is way to short..... :(

Louis and Awie, we asked about the no entry sign. The road is closed for everyone except 4x4's. They had a problem with people in sedans venturing down the road so they put up a no entry sign. Please ask at reception but we were told that if you have a 4x4 and you are willing and able, you may drive this road.

We did not have time to drive it, like I said, a weekend is just way to short.

Thanks. Will venture there sometime. Try to do 4X4 again if my wife
permits. She got a bit hysterical the last time. But it was fun.

  Actually meant of the route!

I did it once before (with a 2x4 nogal) and remember it to be quite spectacular. But the entrance has definitely gone downhill (literally) since then!

TreeMouse & I will be in Tlopi this weekend. I'm seriously keen on trying the 4x4 route out.

I'll ask at reception when we get there on Saturday morning. Look out for a report back some time next week.

Cheers

Hi there

I am hoping JenB or another Marakele junkie can perhaps advise on this road's current status?

Also, is a good map of Marakele available at the park?
