Hi Meandering Mouse and BunnyHugger

Yes this is a must do race !! the new route is a bit more challenging but also gives you much more different viewing than the old route.

My first race was the only time we got into the Kruger on the day of the race, was in 2000, younger and single, done an discovery adventure challenge the thursday and friday, got home the Saturday morning at 1 after event celebrations, left Pretoria at 3 and I a woke up at Kruger gate in the backseat of my car and in time for the race !
Since then we always try to stay in Skukuza the Friday night. Its now a family outing every race weekend. The race starts at 8.30, I remember the one year they had problems at some of the entry gates and we only started 9.30, was very very hot !! Had lions on the route one year, so it was a 19km race!
Do not think you get a permanent number like comrades, will be nice so I can add one. Good luck with your training MM, I will run on basic runners memory, my body should cope !
July and August 2015 booked !!!

Hi Kevman :D and a warm welcome to you.

I completed the Skukuza half marathon last month. It is held every year from Skukuza Village on the first Saturday in August. Proceeds go to a conservation project chosen by the Skukuza marathon club. I am currently busy with my trip report where I am trying to give as many details as possible.

Skukuza Marathon

Unread postby stelliegp123 » Wed Oct 26, 2011 10:29 pm

OK, So I have entered the Marathon and I am busy training VERY hard for this. (I am not the Fittest around.... YET!)

Once again a personal objective in my life.

Now the question that I want to know....

WHO ELSE IS GOING?

I "secured" an entry with the R800 buy in fee, has anyone else?

I do know Meandering Mouse is training for the marathon having done it several times before.
Good luck!

Marathon or 1/2 Marathon? Isn't it just a 21?

It is a half-marathon.

I expect to be there - but standing somewhere along the road with my rifle rather than running!

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

Completed over 6 years in Kruger in my caravan.

EJ I will rather join you than run. I have done half marathons many times in the distant past. No lion will have to catch me as I will be already dead from exhaustion.

Good luck to all the runners.
I am sure you will enjoy it.

Maybe next year.

I'm highly interested in this, where and how does one apply for the half-marathon?

as far as i know, it is necessary to book more than a year in advance (unless you make a particularly generous donation to charity). i have missed the boat, but hope to run it in 2013.

LL. I had to pay R800 for my entry, but it all goes to nature conservation, wouldve paid it any ways during the year for donations, so the entry is a bonus!

I have decided to run again, its all Stellie's fault

Thanks for the link for entries  .

I have only ever run the conservation fee route. It is rather expensive, but I divide the number by 365 days. That works out to less than half a beer a day. Once I have done that little mathematical excercise, I take away the points from my projected blood pressure.

Taking away points from projected blood pressure is done by adding self esteem to feelings of goodwill. This is achieved through a combination of raised endporphins and decreased jeans size.

My final exercise is to think of what is happening to the money I donate, the Rhinos, the rivers, the research, the bush that I love.

Once all these exercises are over, the conservation fee is a no-brainer.

Sorry for my dumb question , but do you guys run openly in the park ? And exposed to hungry wild animals? Just curious to know , will there be an armed ranger with the runners?

I cannot give details of the route, although I think a lot is within the Skukuza staff village. But out on the park roads there are armed guards to ensure safety (I have been there!) and the helicopter flies overhead too.
