When we were in Mokala last month it was apparently that the other camp was Just about to open and that Haak and steek would close down apart from the cottage there. Only problem is that this camp sight is rather a lot more exxpensive even though it also has no power. But there was no indication to where it was. Loved the roughness of Haak and Steek. Some campsite we must visit in the future. Add it to my very long wish list !!

So yes, more expensive than other camp sites in SANParks, but to me worth it for what one gets.

Eliz, I did not realise there was no elec until you mentioned it. We are self sufficient though with a dual battery system in the van and cruiser, so it will not be a problem.

The 21kms of dirt road from the N1 to the park was very very corrugated but the roads in the park are narrow and very comfy to drive on.. a lovely park. And they even have your iced fruit drink ready for you when you arrive at reception.
When driving on the road to the Park look out for the herd of Sable on the left hand side . The are on private land and seemed to be at the water hole..

We drove both gravel roads
N12 - Lillydale Gate (16 km) and
N12 - Mosu Gate (21 km)
in the last 3 weeks.

Yes, they were corrugated at that time, but no deep potholes that can't be avoided - both roads were drivable for sedan cars.
Depending whether it's your own car or a rented one you may drive at speeds from 30 to 90 km/h.

The road N12 - Lillydale is slightly better than the other one but if you need to drive to Mosu and have little time, I would suggest driving to the Hayfield turnoff and then the 21 kms.

If you arrive early you may also enter at Lillydale gate and drive the road inside of Mokala to Mosu. That brings you an extra game drive...
Depending on your speed (max. 40 km/h) and animals sightings it takes some extra time - from a minimum of 30 minutes up to 3 hrs.

We are planning to visit the park on Saturday, will give some feedback and photos.We have been visiting the park on day trips on several occasions over the the past few years and have never left disappointed.Also stayed overnight at the camp and Haak and Steek and can recommend it as a great experience!

Hi, we wanted to visit Mokala next year as well as Augrabies. We think of doing so during September 2012. We do camping (tents). Do you think the month is the right time to visit those 2 camps. Is there anything you can recommented?? Which camping site at Mokala etc. We are from Paarl Western Cape. During the visit to Mokala and Augrabies, we also are going to visit Karoo National Park on the way up or down. Also for the first time.

September for Mokala should be fine, although it may still be cold during the night.Was in the Park on Saturday and had great sightings which included Roan, Sable and Rhino.The new Motswedi campsites looks great as well.I have camped at the Haak and Steek campsite as well which is also a great venue.The main difference between the two is that at Motwedi you have private ablutions and a small private area to prepare food whilst at Haak and Steek you share ablutions.

Hello Div, thanks for answering my post. From what I read, there are no power points at the camping sites. Is that true? We don't mind about that but must prepared for it. I'm looking forward to see al the beautiful things I read about this new camp. Have a nice weekend.
