Tried to look for other YR's but saw none all the time at Satara.

Hallo There!!
When I was at Shingwedzi in December 2010 everybody that I met said if you want to see lions, leopard and cheetah go to Satara and drive the S100.
Well in the last 3 times I drove there I only saw one old male lion and some zebra, waterbuck and buffaloes!

Hi rufie,

Sorry to hear about your experience on the S100 :(
The S100 does get many big cat sightings. This is because it is such a busy road the cats will get spotted more often. It's all about being at the right place at the right time, as on any road. If you drive the S100 early morning late afternoons, serveral times, there is a big chance you wil see a cat. But after all, the KNP is not a zoo.

Hope you'l have better luck next time

Regards Tim

One drive, others said we just missed 3 prides. Maybe my dad's car smelt like hunterpee.

:funny:

We used to boast that we have always seen cats on the S100; until one day it didn't happen. However, most times we drive that route we see something special!

During our recent visit we only had the time to drive the S100 once and we saw lions on 4 different locations. We Drove the road around 10am.

Seen late one evening on the S100 during Oct 2012.
This male Leopard crossed the road in front of us then run past us to cross the road behind us to head off a family of warthog.
The warthog boar spotted the leopard at the last second and escaped the leopards paw.
It was oh so close.

In my experience the S100 is a great route for Big Cat hunting. December 2011 we saw Cheetah, Lion and Leopard all in one drive. BUT, I think the best drive is to complete the entire loop i.e. start with the S100 turn right onto the S41 and then right on the H6 back towards Satara.

We had brilliant Cheetah sightings on the S41 and the H6 had brilliant Lion sightings as well as a Cheetah lying in the centre of the road about 5 km from the Nwanetsi picnic site. People don't drive the H6, they rather return on the S100 again.

Early Mornings are hectic on the S100 as everybody staying at Satara races there in the morning. The irony is that the one morning we went past the S100 and rather took the H6, and there they were...... Lions in the road with only two other cars!

It's the luck of the draw I suppose! :wall:
