We saw the same thing at Shipandani Hide, and every time the Hippo submerged the Heron had to fly off and then return as soon as the landing spot became available once again!
Very interesting and I guess goes to show how versatile and clever they are. :D

Many years ago ... lowlevel bridge at Skukuza ?
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

We certainly watched the herons doing the same thing during our visit last month - picture included on our TR. Funniest of all was when the hippo was just below the surface and therefore out of sight and it looked as if the birds were 'walking on water'. Spotted them doing this at Lake Panic as well.

Spent a morning watching the ferry at Sunset Dam in November - here is a short video I put together.

there also seems to be competition between the heron over certain prime fishing backs

Watched a Goliath the other afternoon, using a peice of wood as bait, picked it up and tossed it into the water, when fishes came to investigate bang!! he helped self. Have heard of and seen the smaller herons do this, but the Goliath a first for me!
