I did not get to Mokala. The trip was cancelled for very sad reasons.

Hi BB

Sorry to hear that but maybe next time. I am sure you won't be disappoionted.

I'll see what I can do with my trip reports - maybe just post a few random pictures from my first ever trip to Mokala (Feb 2011) to give people an idea what can be expected from Mokala.

WOW!! What a pleasant surprise. :D :D

We just love Mokala. It is so peaceful and the staff very friendly. (And no problems accepting our (old  ) Wildcards.)

The roads are very good, with only one section where it is badly corrugated between the N12 and the main gate. Though we didn't see BB's Brown Hyena or Black Rhino, we saw beautiful animals. Warthogs are as common as impis in KNP! And the kudu! Magnificent!

Strangely we didn't see that many birds :hmz:

Thanks for the advice to take enough food and drink, Lion Queen!

It was a lovely day and ideal breakaway from the excitement and drama of the Cravenweek. And it provided the perfect atmosphere to be close our Creator.

I thought you'll enjoy it!

I am preparing a trip report on my trips to Mokala but I'll post it when I am more skilled in photo development. Hopefully in the next few months.

I see that Motswedi Campsite has been added to the list of accomodation for Mokala but one cannot make a booking yet.
According to the new Wild Magazine each site will have its own ablution and kitchen facility.
Any photo's available yet? :D

Mokala NP animal sightings today 13/9/2011

Unread postby gqueen » Tue Sep 13, 2011 7:29 pm

We went on a drive today in Mokala. What a gem. Sadly we stayed in Lilydale, which is a pretty camp, but far away from the game viewing , AND has horrible road access. See my next post!

We left at 8:00 and got back at 13:30, but this would have been 1.5 hours shorter if we had stayed in the main part of the park.

In our 5.5 hours we saw:

only 7 cars (it seemed we were almost alone).

ostrich
gemsbok
warthogs
black wildebeasts
duiker
kudu
white tailed mongoose
sable
weavers nests
red hartebeasts
springbok
tsessebe
zebras
baboons
girafee (DEAD)
buffalo
eland
roan antelope
steenbok

Wow an amazing Drive..

Lilydale (Mokala NP) ROAD WARNING!!!!!

Unread postby gqueen » Tue Sep 13, 2011 7:51 pm

We drove our car (rented) into Lilydale yesterday. The road from the N-12 is 16 km of HELL.

It is so corregated, full of potholes, and rocks, that it is not appropriate for cars. It took us at least an hour, and we had to stop just to give our bodies a break from the rattling.

When we arrived at camp the receptionist apologized for the road, BEFORE we mentioned it. She said that SA Parks hopes (wants?) the province to fix it. (I doubt the province would fix it, because SA parks will have to eventually.)

If had to take my own car down here, I would have had to turn around and not risk the damage to my car.

The funny thing is that Lilydale is trying to bill itself as a conference center. A conference center that you can only access with a 4WD seems sort of limited.

Sadly, we have to leave here tomorrow. I'm trying to talk my girlfriend into driving out, and I'll just walk out and meet her.

We got engaged at Mokala

Unread postby KNP-Junkee » Tue Oct 04, 2011 1:58 pm

What a special weekend - A great thumbs up to the staff, Susan, Tess, Nicolene and the rest at Mosu Lodge, Mokala. I have thanked you before but fellow forumites, you need to get to Mokala if you need good service from people with big hearts.

We got engaged on saturday in a setup nothing short of absolute brilliance! Tess is still sorting out the pics and I will post some asap.

It was our first time there and I loved every bit!

Thanks again Susan, Tess and Nicolene-you are the best!!
