This is what is possible through donations received from members of this forum
The Honorary Rangers of the Virtual region have a few categories of projects that you the forum have voted on that we support, anti poaching is one of the important areas of focus.
Sharing the border with two neighbouring countries creates a few problems in the fight against poaching for the rangers in Kruger. Poachers would simply slip over the border and they can not follow them legally. The Olifants Gorge is just one such area, but with a difference, Kruger National Park and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique are working together to stop this.
The Conservation Services unit of the SANParks Honorary Rangers donated two patrol boats to SANParks to patrol this area and in 2008 Kruger National Park lent Limpopo National Park one of these units to help in patrolling their side. The Olifants Gorge is an area where illegal fisherman enter the park to fish but his is not the main concern, these fishermen also transport poachers in and out of the Houtboschrand area do do their cowardly deeds and slaughter our rhino.
Due to budget restraints the boat lay idle on the Mozambique side and the route became open to poachers once again. Virtual Region of the SANParks Honorary Rangers hope that with this donation of R 5,000 we can help in getting the active patrolling back on track and that other regions and companies would follow suit and donate to keep this essential service running at peak performance.
If any one works for or has a relative / friend at one of the petroleum companies I would love to have a pm offering support
