During the last week we have been putting out camera traps as a trail run for research in the park (thanks to a very generous forumite). During the trail run we have discovered that these cameras can be used for so many other things such as security, research and to monitor animal movements for new potential activities.

Trap cams were put up next to roads, waterholes and other places of interest and the footage and pictures we got was just amazing. I post some pictures for all top see some of the results.

The research team in KTP is looking at getting quite a few of these cameras and the section ranger as well. We were told as soon as the purchase them, we would be able to use them in the activity department as well to record sightings and be able to post them.

We will be going out later today to download last night’s pictures if there was anything interesting I will post them....that is if the hyena didn’t make test bite a camera

Like the lioness and sea turtle that were in the news for "stealing" cameras, you mean.

Hey KG this is great

If you have any details about what cameras you are using and how you set it up etc and how much, could you pm me? My folks have a share in a house in the West Coast National Park and Ive been wanting to put one of the cameras up for a while but not sure about how to go about it.

Great...I tell you if we get a few people setting these traps all over the country we will make some great finds!!

Like I just discovered for myself the night time habits of the porcupine population in Cape Town...there are many of them and they are all over the suburbs close to the mountain but you just dont see them unless you are lucky and so a camera trap will help in a big way

It would be amazing to see what happens at night and where as this could determine if we can start a new 'drive/activity' especially at the time the animal/s are more active and certain behavioural patters can be recorded.
