Hello Maxwell and Richprins,
I saw this bird last week, around Mopani.
I uploaded a larger photo of this raptor and also zoomed in on his beak and feet:

Thanks for those Michael. the latest shots really do blow Tawny Eagle out of the water for me.
I can see nothing that dissuades me from African Hawk Eagle other than the beak is still on the small size even for that.
I could, just could, be open to persuasion that it is nothing more than a Common Buzzard.

It would be great if it really was a African Hawk Eagle!
When you say Common Buzzard, do you mean Steppe Buzzard? Because my book says they do not occur in Southern Africa at all from May to September.
So probably is a Hawk Eagle :D :D

Probably is a Hawk-Eagle.
I am not a great fan of Splitting and the varieties of "Common" Brown Buzzards leave me cold.
Mountain/Forest - Common & Steppe. All the same really. Even the experts disagree so until they make their minds up I shall join the Buzzards on the fence.

DJ, I reckon this is an immature African Hawk Eagle.

Cheers

Niall.

This bird was rather far away so I had to crop it for ID, not very clear I'm afraid. Could it be a juv Martial Eagle? Seen on the Crocodile River Road, mid-June.

Salamanda, I'm going to pass on your bird. The raptor seems to have bare legs, which will rule out the true eagles (including Martial). But I think it is going to turn out to be a juvenile or sub-adult of some kind, as I can't find a adult raptor that fits all characteristics that I can see... My best bet would be sub-adults black-chested snake eagle, but the apparently dark eye throws me off ... let's see what the experts come up with :D

Thanks Dabchick.

Here below is a further crop, hope this will help someone with the raptor. Please also see the flycatcher above! Thanks.

Okay, definitely not BCSE :hmz:

Now it seems to me that there are some white feathers on the lower legs (not bare legs as I thought before), just very thin/tight covering of white feathers....

I now think it is an immature African hawk eagle, starting to get adult colours, as evidenced from the white rather than buffish "pants"

Yes, I did wonder if it might be that, my Raptor Guide shows white feathers very tight to the leg and it does have that flattish head . . . . Thanks Dabchick.
