Hi WillemK, the Martial Eagles are still around Dalkeith Waterhole as you can see in this video that I made in August 2011. I filmed the Eagles also mating.

Hi N

Great video - and I am so glad to hear they are still around. Hopefully they'll still be there in Dec 2011 when I'll be back. I saw great photo opportunities in your video - sorry, I am a photo guy and not a video guy. But I really enjoyed watching your video as it was well shot.

Keep it coming!

Hi I

Your comment:

"Willem K, WOW. what lens did you use?
We were in KNP in July and was amazed how many Martial Eagles we saw and good sightings!"

Great for you - the sightings of the martial eagles in the Kruger. My sightings were in the Kgalagadi Trans. park and one doesn't get better raptor sightings in the KTP than this.

My equipment used: Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 70-200mmm f2.8 lens and Nikon 2.0 convertor for these photos. A bit of a overkill as the eagle was sitting on the branch of a tree about 20-30m away from the car.

WillemK thats a good shot, maybe not technically
but well composed. Lenses don't bring composition.

Can someone please confirm the identity of the beauty below? Southern KNP last Sunday. Whalberg's pale form?

Hi

Your Eagle looks like a sub-adult martial Eagle.

The legs are booted, and the small black spots are starting to appear.

Hi guys, I'm back from KNP and am preparing my trip report. I would like to ask some help identifying some raptors we saw or confirming my ID's. All were seen around the Pretoriuskop/Phabeni area in the past four days.

My best guess would be African hawk eagle, but I'm not confident at all.

Thank you so much for your help! :gflower:

3. Looks like a young Martial Eagle.

No 3 is a Wahlberg's Eagle - pale phase. (Juvvie Martials do not have the pale eyes and thin leggings evident in the bird in the photo).

With such an impressive bill (way off dainty!) and pale eyes (I do not know Wahlberg's to sport such pale eyes in any form), I cannot agree on mel123's #3 being a Wahlberg's eagle. Her picture shows too little (no?) yellow gape. For me the single toe (greenish-white) signals the classic Martial eagle ID feature... off-white bare claws.

IMHO a number of 'mites have correctly ID'd this young martial eagle
