I agree, Makhadzi picnic sites is one of those hidden gems.

When Makhadzi opened a few years ago, a big bull ele didn't take kindly to it, so he tore out the electric fence, pulled down the fever tree in the middle and 'rearranged' some of the pole fencing.

We were there about a week later.

Next time a picnic site is planned, maybe consultation with the locals about their favourite walks would help a bit.

Makhadzi is certainly a little gem and a favourite Never seen roan or eland or lions or cheetah , but usually tsessebe , and ellies also favours the area
The picnic spot is clean , and there is an interesting display in one of the buildings .

We love Makhadzi...met Masthulele on the road going to Makhadzi and except for the persons in charge of Makhadzi, we were the only people braaing a nice breakfast there some time ago. Could not resist buying that tin-can flower arrangements that now sits perfectly on my dressing table.

The link went AWOL when DB tried it as well. I tried it now and it behaved...

It's so nice to see that other Forumites know and like the place too. Maybe the people I met at Kruger recently were just all inexperienced "newbies" instead of "in the know" like us Forumites!

I haven't been to Makhadzi either but thanks to you annie R when up in that area again I will be going there. Sounds great.

Hopefully you'll enjoy the peace, RosemaryH. Duck into the little info centre - some interesting historical stuff about Steinacker's Horse (what a bunch of skelms they were in some ways!) and the Maluleke people.

The first time that Trish and I tried to visit this picnic site,. we met up with Alexander and his askari. He had Trish reverse some 2km back towards the tar road until he decided that he had had enough fun for the day and turned into the bush. We then did not have enough time to visit the site. We have since been there twice and find it to be delightfully quiet and peaceful.

Hi Everyone,
I just returned from the Kruger and made a special trip to Makhadzi Picnic Site to hopefully purchase the decorative recycled cans there. I'm happy to note that it was a great success as the only problem was choosing which of these works of art to purchase.
Thank You MATTHYS for wishing me a good adventure as this brought me great sightings--but you'll have to read my upcoming TR for the details.
