good stuff at Makhadzi

Unread postby annie R » Thu Aug 25, 2011 11:56 am

Few people I met at Kruger recently had ever been to Makhadzi picnic site (on the H15 towards the Giriyondo border gate). I can't understand this; it can't all be because they're trying to avoid local bakkies stacked with mattresses that seemed to proliferate along that road when we were there! (Doesn't Mozambique sell mattresses?!)

There are so many good reasons to go there. You might see roan, tsessebe, eland, rhino, lion or cheetah along this road. The picnic site itself is really is a special place and has an interesting small information centre. It's also a peaceful spot to stop for your bacon and eggs or coffee and rusks. The two attendants who look after the place are pretty creative too; take a drive next time you're in the area and buy one of their tin-can artworks. See more at ...

When Makhadzi opened a few years ago, a big bull ele didn't take kindly to it, so he tore out the electric fence, pulled down the fever tree in the middle and 'rearranged' some of the pole fencing.

We were there about a week later.

Next time a picnic site is planned, maybe consultation with the locals about their favourite walks would help a bit.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

We love Makhadzi...met Masthulele on the road going to Makhadzi and except for the persons in charge of Makhadzi, we were the only people braaing a nice breakfast there some time ago. Could not resist buying that tin-can flower arrangements that now sits perfectly on my dressing table.

It's so nice to see that other Forumites know and like the place too. Maybe the people I met at Kruger recently were just all inexperienced "newbies" instead of "in the know" like us Forumites!

Hopefully you'll enjoy the peace, RosemaryH. Duck into the little info centre - some interesting historical stuff about Steinacker's Horse (what a bunch of skelms they were in some ways!) and the Maluleke people.

The first time that Trish and I tried to visit this picnic site,. we met up with Alexander and his askari. He had Trish reverse some 2km back towards the tar road until he decided that he had had enough fun for the day and turned into the bush. We then did not have enough time to visit the site. We have since been there twice and find it to be delightfully quiet and peaceful.

Hi Everyone,
I just returned from the Kruger and made a special trip to Makhadzi Picnic Site to hopefully purchase the decorative recycled cans there. I'm happy to note that it was a great success as the only problem was choosing which of these works of art to purchase. :D
Thank You MATTHYS for wishing me a good adventure as this brought me great sightings--but you'll have to read my upcoming TR for the details.
