Could anyone tell me how far it is from West Coast Gate to Postberg please, also what is the state of the road and how long would it take . Also to then drive from Postberg to Langebaan would take how long. Very basic questions but I cannot find the answers to them or a key showing distances on the Parks website map. Thank you.
We are hoping to see the flowers in the second week of September and just have one night to spend near the park, should we stay in the park?

There is a map here http://www.sanparks.org/parks/west_coast/tourism/map.php but it doesn't give distances. Going by memory, it is probably about 30 km from the main gate on the R27 to the Postberg gate. The road is tar all the way, except for the Postberg section and about a km or 2 before you get there. :) The speed limit is, I think, 50 kph ?? so it would take an hour or less -- also depending on how often you stop.

On the way back, you would turn towards thr Geelbek Restuarant and Langebaan is not far up that road -- about 20 mins or so.

Sorry to be a bit vague, but it gives you an idea, I hope.

Hi cheaptrip and welcome to the forum!

You can see the area quite well on Google Maps and the distances too, if you zoom in.

Hi Cheaprtrip.
Love the name, a budget traveller after my own heart!

We were in the park yesterday and the flowers are just starting to bloom, so I think it should be quite spectacular by the time you go.

It is about 30 km from the first gate on the CT side with about 3 km of good gravel road before you enter postberg part of the reserve. We saw the most fabulous animals there (Eland, Gemsbok, Bontebok, Springbok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Wildebeest and 5 bat eared foxes.) We also saw Ostriches and numerous birds (sorry Micetta, just learning), :rtm: but could identify the Bulbuls, Lesser Collared Sunbird, Scrub Robin, Bokmakierie, Moorhens and African Spoonbill.

It is about 19 km back to the Geelbek turnoff and then about another 25 km back into Langebaan.
I would love to stay in the park as I should imagine you could get to see the nocturnal animals which you won't see during the day, but that does add to the cost. :?

Good luck and enjoy whatever you decide to do.

17 km from the junction with the R27-Postberg road. Geelbek is close on 15 km from the Langebaan gate. It is my favorite cycling route so I know it by heart.

Had a ride on the bike this morning, must say the flowers in and around Langebaan look a bit better than 2 weeks ago. We had good rain this week and Windguru is forecasting some more for this coming week up to Wednesday so who knows there may be some hope for a fair peak. Crested Val I think your timing is spot-on. The flowers are a bit smaller and less but what we have seems to be heading for a peak early September - about 2-3 weeks later than normal. If the weather is good tomorrow we will head out to Postberg to see the flowers there. Will report back with some pics if we go. (However we have rain forecast-ed :hmz:)

Hi Crested Val, you're welcome :) . It has been absolutely poring since first light today so unfortunately no Postberg today  . Will see what it looks like next week Sunday.

I can very strongly recommend http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=21691 to see what the weather is doing in Langebaan. The link should take you to the Langebaan forecast directly. It is by far the best forecast for this area - especially the week-ahead forecast.

Hi Val

Spent yesterday at Postberg, and this being our first time to ever see the 'flowers', we were really happy with what we saw. It was a lovely day and we had a picnic at Plankiesbaai which was very special. Going to sort through our pics and will post some for you.

I did learn that one needs to have a warm sunny day to be able to really enjoy the flowers - otherwise they do not open. So hoping for perfect weather for your visit there too

At last we had a chance to go and view the flowers. All these photos were taken Sunday 28 August. I think the flowers haven't peak yet so the next two weeks should be still very good viewing:

Hi Crested Val, you're welcome. I would suggest you try to avoid going to Postberg over the weekend as it gets quite busy with all the visitors but more important yes the flowers want sunny weather to bloom. Safe flying, enjoy the WCNP.

@Caracal: We saw a caracal on our way home. Looked like a young one. Have seen a much bigger cat in the same area before, so this must be one of the offspring (a short distance from Kraalbaai). The biggest one I ever saw here was outside the Park - on the steep hill just outside the Langebaan gate.
