Hi Bean 46

No knowing your destination in KNP or the time of day you will travel I would like suggest a slightly different route

My suggestion is to take the road through White River and then the R40 to Hazeyview and then into Kruger park using the Phabeni Gate.

The road to Numbi is not that bad but the traffic and the road users make using this road quite hazourdous IMO

I hadn't used this road for about two years and following another forumites suggestion used it last year - the drivers on this road have their own Rules - which deteriorate drastically during busy times. I won't use it again

Just be wary of the local Taxis

Enjoy your trip to KNP

I agree with Kickercat ,

Not really a nice road to drive , the road is nice but the drivers
I was always at 50 , 60 km/h no more ...Every time, it is at you to take care , the others don't ( specially the taxi pick up , go slow when you see one stopped on the side of the road ...)
You need 6 eyes to drive there
I had no problems on the other roads at all .
Yes , other roads are a lot nicer , specially the R40 , and Hazyview is easy to go through .
From , KMIA , turn right , go through White -River , about less than one hour for Hazyview and after only 10 km to Phabeni .
The road from KMIA to Malelane is also very nice .

My SO will need to leave our family trip early.
Is there a possibility of getting a taxi/shuttle or other non selfdrive transportation from Pretoriuskop to KMIA.

Thanks in advance!

Actually I think Bert had a link to a company that does transfers to and from the airport. He found it somewhere on the main SANParks site.

Edit:
Found it on the KNP page on the main site. Getting there. Have a look under Bus Shuttle.

I will be visiting KNP for the first time in July and would appreciate some advice on transportation to the park. I will be flying into the Kruger-Mpumalanga airport and staying in Skukuza (my transport is covered within the park). Does anyone have recommendations for the best way to get from the airport to the camp? I'd prefer not to rent a car, if possible. What options are there for hiring a driver or taking a shuttle, and approximately how much do they run? Your help is much appreciated.

(let me know if this isn't the right place to post this...wasn't sure if it belonged here or in the Kruger forum)

Private Connections (a private company) operates this shuttle service between Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) to Kruger National Park. The contact details are:

Heather Dornan
Office Tel.: (013) 750 2435
Cell: 072 245 4677
E-mail: heather@pctours.co.za

The trip takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. It is recommended that the shuttle should be booked with Heather.

Has anyone withdrawn money from an ATM at Nelspruit airport recently and, if so, did you happen to notice the maximum amount of Rand you were permitted to withdraw in one transaction? I'm hoping I can withdraw 2,000 Rand from an ATM there at the airport upon arrival but I fear the maximum withdrawal permitted will be less than that. Thanks.

Hi jhawktx,

I am open to correction, but as far as I understand the ATMs in SA to work, the maximum you can withdraw in a day depends on the daily withdraw limit on your card. I advise you to check this with your bank before leaving for SA. I have often withdrawn more than R2000 in cash at ATMs throughout the country without any problems - but only to the daily cash withdrawal limit on my card. This limit protects one should one loose the card. I would imagine the ATM at Nelspruit Airport to hold sufficient cash ... however, do not rely on ATMs in KNP for this.

Hi DinkyBird,
Thanks. The limit on my card is about 3,500 Rand.

Having not travelled to SA, I'm not sure how ATM's work there. But I have travelled to Europe many times and even though my card limit is well above 200 Euros, oftentimes the ATM itself limits the withdrawal to only 200 Euros. I have noticed these maximum withdrawal amounts have been decreasing over the years. Years ago I could go to Europe and withdraw the equivalent of about 400 Euros. Not anymore. Usually when you try to withdraw in Europe or the USA a screen will pop up with choices of amounts. Those choices will usually include a maximum amount and if you try to input a different and larger amount, it will not allow it. I assume this is the banks way of forcing you to take multiple withdrawals in smaller amounts...thereby increasing the overall fees collected by the bank.

Back to South Africa, I have read on this forum that the maximum amount allowed to be withdrawn within Kruger at ATM's is quite low (maybe 200 Rand ???) but I was assuming it was more at Nelspruit airport. So I was just wondering if anyone had been to that airport recently and, if so, what was the maxiumum amount allowed to be withdrawn.

For example, Dinkybird, you mentioned that in SA you have often withdrawn over 2,000 Rand in South Africa at ATM's. But what is the most you have been able to withdraw within Kruger? My understanding from reading the forum is the amount is quite low within Kruger.

Hi CC,
Yes, due to the reasons you mentioned and also especially due to the low amount allowed to be withdrawn, I don't plan to ever use an ATM within Kruger National Park.

As an alternative, I was hoping to use the ATM at Nelspruit airport. I was hoping to get 2000 Rand in one shot at the Nelspruit airport and then not have to worry about cash for the rest of the trip.

Hence my question about the maximum allowable withdrawal at ATM's at the Nelspruit airport.

The card we will use for the ATM withdrawal does have a 4 digit PIN so we are set there...thanks for that reminder.

Interested in knowing the answer to this myself as we'll be flying into Nelspruit.

As a backup we may pull some money out at OR Tambo before our Nelspruit flight.

Last time around we stayed at Emperors Palace in Joberg and, being a casino, had no trouble taking money out of their ATM's. We also pulled money out at Letaba (a regular ATM, not the lower-$ shop ATM's...BUT it tends to be out of order) and at a bank in Hoedspruit. Depending on which gate you are going to enter, you might be able to stop in at a bank atm.

I understand there are several at Malelane, on the way to our entry gate.

Hi jhawktx

I actually withdrew cash from the ABSA Bank ATM at Nelspruit Airport two weeks ago….I remember there were options for more than R1000, but for the life of me cannot remember how much. :wall: I’m flying to Nelspruit again this coming weekend….and will probably draw cash….will report back on Monday

Hi jhawktx

As promised, a report-back on the ATM at Nelspruit airport…I used the ABSA machine this morning….did not see other ATM’s. It seems the max amount you can select is R1 500 (even if you select “own amount”)…..it is a “Quick Cash’ ATM….suppose that is why the limit is so low :?
