Dear Forumites

I've had the privilege of being a regular visitor to Kruger for more than 30 years, but must admit that I do not know Kruger roads, especially when reference is made to a road using only a number - e.g. S102.

I obviously have a lot of maps at home, and recently brought one to the office, but still find myself looking for many minutes trying to locate the specific road mentioned in a TR or (for example) when best/worst roads are discussed. I never knew that S102 is so far away from S100 and S101!

Suggestion: can we try to include an indication of the area where the road is? E.g. on the S102 (south of Skukuza), we saw Doggies; or on the S101 (near Shingwedzi), we saw a huge Ellie? Or on the S106 (Central KNP) we saw .... etc.

:hmz: :hmz:

I have attempted to do this as far as possible - the "S34 Munywini road" or the S52 Redrocks / Tshanga road .

The S terminology better suits the R & N road areas outside the KNP ?

I agree with Dupacc, when mentioning a road with reference to the nearest camp, it makes it much easier to locate on a map (or just imagine the general area if no map is handy).

I'm sorry Ndloti, but "S34 Munywini road" doesn't mean anything to me - no idea where it is without searching on a map. The Redrocks road you mention is only familiar to me because I know where "Redrocks" is. Someone who doesn't know where "Redrocks" is would appreciate a mention of "near Shingwedzi", I would imagine.

Would you guys like a detailed description from Skukuza?

If you go there often you should know them like the roads around your home......

With all due respect, the KNP has such a simple, limited and generally logically numbered road network that any regular visitor should have little trouble learning most of it by heart, and be able to dirve around the entire park without referring to a map other than very occasionally.

True, Johan
A very logically numbered network.
I just do not think of those roads as

S100
or such.

Dupacc,
I thought it was only me! I suppose its one's responsibility to know the roads by number but I only get as far as the H9 and S100. The others I keep on forgetting.
We talk about the Timbavati road, Satara to Olifants road etc.
I guess its like age, only numbers :hmz:

Agreed , true Kruger lovers should immediately know the location of the road between Ngirivane & the main tar road between Nsemani & Timbavati river , and not have to refer to the S12 , which to me sounds somewhat "technical".

It is only since joining the forum that I have really had to start getting to know roads by numbers. I hardly ever use a map when driving in Kruger, so do not get to know roads by numbers. When looking at a map it is usually in a tree book. I think it is a great idea to be a bit more descriptive when mentioning a road.

As a "Tannie" who is rigtingbeduiweld (no sense of direction) I would really appreciate names and not numbers - and I am a regular visitor for about forty years -

Thanks for the suggestion Dupacc  I do try to give more info when I answer to a newbie, but it is just too easy to be remiss.
