Hi people, Great to be back on the forums after a fab holiday in Vic Falls. Would like to know whats the best camp in KRUGER to spot WILD DOG. I will be visiting the Park in June/July next year and my 3 nights are booked from the 28th to 30th of June, 1 night in Shingwedzi, and 2 nights in Letaba, and am booking my July nights on the 1st of August with my currunt plan being 3 nights in Satara, 3 nights in LS, 1 night in Skukuza, 1 night in Satara, and my last night back in familiar terotery for me Shingwedzi. So if there in another camp where I have a chance to spot Wild Dogs will alter my plan. Really want to see a WILD DOG IN KRUGER. HAVENT SEEN 1 YET

Hey Kallis!
Nice to hear you enjoyed vic falls :D :D :D :D

I can't answer your question :hmz:
But if I were booking a wild dog hunt in Kruger I would book:
Croc Bridge
Berg En Dal
Skukuza
Tamboti
8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

My wild dog camp batting order K1786.

Croc Bridge - have seen them from there quite a few times.
Orpen/Tam/Matoela - recently seen near Rabelais - have seen them twice on the H7
BnD - often seen by others.
Pkop - Voortrekker road to Afsaal area

Happy hunting....

I have seen them at Berg en Dal and at Tamboti/orpen/maroela, I would definitely say your best chance is to see them is to spend some time in the orpen area.

There is also a pack in the letaba area normally in the direction of the Phalaborwa gate, it might be worth asking the guides at letaba where they were last seen.

Thanks everyone, looks like the best camps are orpen, croc bridge, pretoriuskop and BnD, I have some thinking to do.

Hi Cheetah really loved it, and saw WILD DOGS for the first time in my life there on the main highway between Bulwayo and Vic Falls. Really got me excited

Kallis1786 I do not know which is the best camp to spot Wild Dogs, but we have had 3 Wild Dog sightings in Kruger on 3 separate occasions – 2 sightings on the Orpen /Satara road whilst staying at Orpen Camp and 1 sighting whilst staying at Punda Maria at the Witsand water hole on the Mahonie loop. I wish you exciting Wild Dog sighting (s) and great :cam:

Hi Grantmissy thanks for the input, am really  that you have seen Wild Dogs in my area, a place which I call second home, I am in the Punda area almost every weekend, and I know the Lion Pride in Mahooni loop but Wild Dogs, you really must be very lucky with Dogs to see them there I'll also celebrate that there are WILD DOGS in Punda    . I really wish I spot them in my next years trip.

The Voortrekker road between Pkop and Afsaal might be closed when you are there :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:
Look at the road closure thread.
BTW don't count Skuks out. Bushcraft and Pumbaa saw the doggies plenty around Skuks :D

I wouldn't go to Pretoriouskop if I were you

Do you want to camp? Stay in a bungalow? Or are you keen on trying safari tent accom?

Kallis1786,

I think Skukuza is the best camp from where you can hunt for dogs followed by Biyamiti, Croc Bridge and Pretoriuskop. I had no luck at Berg n Dal, but understand its also a hot spot.

I've quoted from kesheshe's trip report just to show you the great sightings you can get on the Eloff street (H4-1) toward Lower Sabie. The only dogs I've spotted where north of Afsaal near Jock Safari Lodge.

Day 2 - Continued

We expected the road to be busy and it was but we were not in a rush due to the 2pm check in time (what a joke). As per normal we wanted to get away from some of the traffic so took all the dirt loop roads on the right hand side of the H4-1.

Up to this point the general game viewing had been good but as the grass was longer than expected due to the good rains the photo opportunities had been limited – this was about to change. On the second loop we saw 2 cars parked up ahead so very slowly creep towards them and we came across this:

This is the same pack that we had the pleasure of watching hunting in February so we actually recognised some of dogs by the patterns which was nice. It was nice to have them in a more natural environment and not on a tar road which most of our wild dog sightings have been. It was close to midday so they were resting due to the heat.

Biyamiti Day 2:

We left early in the direction of Biyamiti weir to see if we are not lucky with the lions, but could not find any of them. After the weir we headed for Renosterkoppies looking for Wild dogs and at the intersection with the S26 decided to turn left rather than going straight. Not sure why, but luck was on our side and only a few 100 m on the tar road we came across Wild dogs.

One of the dogs walked towards the car and smelled the back tyres. Then they all decided to head into the bush again running towards the S114.

Above are my pics taken near Afsaal when we stayed at Biyamiti in April 2011.

WOW SON GODDIN, How I would dream to take pics of WILD DOGS in Kruger. Cheetah I am going to camp in Kruger, and it's just me and my mate, quite excited, first time we camping and first time we going to stay South of Kruger, just had day visits before to the South, I have spent a week at Shingwedzi a couple of times but that was my longest stay in the park so really excited for the 13 day trip and for the first time it's going to be just me and my mate, how can I forget my X-Trail. You had your first camping trip this year so how was it. There are WILD DOGS in the park I just dont have luck with them. Lets hope next year can change that for me.

WOW. More WILD DOGS at Croc Bridge. But I think I'll prefer LS and just have drives to CROC BRIDGE.
