Thanks NickyG - where and when sighted?

Hi everyone

I am taking a friend from A|us to Addo next weekend and he is dying to see Lion and Hyena. I was wondering if you had any favourite spots for spotting these special animals (especially early morning and evening when they are active)

Was at Hapoor yesterday and apparently 5 Hyenas were feeding on a Buffalo carcass. I only saw 3 separate Hyenas including this one - he was chased off the Buffalo by a lion (Nomad I think). He came across this corpse (Jackal ?), rolled on it and then picked it up and carried it away. Nomad really did not enjoy the hyena and chased this particular individual twice before the hyena decided to leave the area. There was speculation as to who killed the buffalo - according to a guide I overheard it was the lions and another lady was sure it was the coalition of 5 hyenas. There was blood on the road and the buffalo's corpse was about 5m into the bush. What did impress me was the opportunistic feeding of the Black Backed Jackal on the buffalo and there up to 5 around the buffalo. (when I work out how to post images I will add the hyena and jackal)

We saw these very inquisitive Hyena in the park a month or so ago. The one stared into the drivers side window for quiet a while. Was a little intimidating after a while

Pic taken in Addo, roughly where the road forks (left to Carol's rest, straight to Zuurkop turnoff/Carol's rest). I think its Gorak Loop. This sorry looking hyeana, came from the water hole(mud pit) on the right, and into the bush on the left.
I dont know if it is a deposed queen, or a victim of a lion encounter, as you can see, the right ear is missing.

taken on 26/6 this year. Meaniing to post it up a while now.

Not sure if you're still looking for pics? I have one from early Feb but can't download it. also trying to do a TR but not very exciting without pics. can anybody help me sort it? I've tried using the 'advice' on the forum but not working I'm using flickr if that helps.

Hi norfolk tiger, flikr does not allow us to post pics here, I had the same problem, but try uploading via photobucket . There is a way to use flikr photos but its a lot harder hope this helps

Yes, we would still appreciate any clear photos that would help to update our hyena database. I usually use Tinypic.com for uploading photos and find this quite simple (you must create a free account though). Otherwise, you are welcome to send the pics to me by email on meganb@sanparks.org

During our recent visit to Addo we had a surprised sighting of this hyena coming out of the bush and walking towards us. It took place on 27 June'11 at 14h55 on the road from Marion Baree waterhole towards the southern gate (in the middle of the park), just before you get the first hill. I trust that this will be of assistance in your monitoring work.
Will post some more pics on the other topics re lion and other sighting on the same road later, especially now that I got the hang of resizing and posting pics.

Recent sightings of hyena, anyone?
This will assist with research, even if you don't have photos to contribute....

Belatedly, I had two sightings of spotted hyena during my visit to Addo in mid-September. The first was on 19 September at 06h15 on the gravel road just past Rooidam — a group of 5 that crossed the road from right to left. They didn't linger for long, but did show considerable interest in my rear tires! The next morning (20 September at 08h10) I saw a single hyena walking down the tar road between the entrance to the game area and the turnoff towards Domkrag Dam. I do have a few photos, but they're not very good. However, I'll be glad to email them to you if you'd like.

Maybe you had some yummy smelling droppings on your rear tyres!
We use photos to look at the spot patterns on the sides of the hyena as this helps to identify individuals, along with any unique scars or markings elsewhere. if any of your photos might help in this regard, I would appreciate having a look at them. My email: megan.taplin@sanparks.org
