Hi there

I've got the Roberts Bird book on my PDA but the PDA has now gone kaput ... (think I was playing too much solitaire on it and killed the screen )

Does anyone klnow if there are any SA Birding and Animal Tracks Apps for an Iphone or Blackberry? Russ and I have searched the internet and haven't been able to find any but given the vast array of Apps out there we may have missed them!! (found a birding one which appears to be from the USA and we can't work out if it has USA birds or regional birds as it was also on a SA website ...... )

Hope there is someone out there who can give two confused forumites a helping hand

In the UK Itunes store is a Sasol ebirds of Southern Africa for £17.99. No idea what its like, though, and there are not yet any customer reviews.

I met a keen birder in the US who had an Iphone app for US birds and he swore by it.

We've got the SASOL SA Birds on our iPhone and it's almost like the one on the PDA. The only difference is that you can't download your lists like you can with the PDA so if you remove the app your lists are gone (gives a warning about this). It says that the ability to download lists is coming but I don't know if that will be a free upgrade or not.

Hi Saraf - thanks for this info, looks like we will be going the Iphone route rather than try and get my PDA fixed .... We're off to KTP next year and are already making sure we have everything we need ..... no excitement happening ........

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, or if there is a similar thread, or even if someone on this forum developed it, but I found a free app that seems like fun, called "sightings tracker". Anyone with experience using it, or is there something better.

Basically it gives a list of all birds and animals found in kruger, and once you sight any of them, you can easily mark the sighting on a map and add comments etc.

I'm quite new to this technology, so please share your favourite kruger apps!

My wife has the 'gagdet' and downloads android stuff.

I believe the app was developed for knp,but where animal and bird species overlap it can be used anywhere. I accidentally recorded seeing a cheetah with two cubs in my living room for instance :-)

It's shorthand for application, just a little bit of a program you can run on your phone.

Most often apps are designed for and used on smart phones, like the Apple iPhone for example, or any other phone that runs on an Android operating system.

I just needed to mention that ALL KNP animals are not listed in this app, and those that are only includes mammals. I didn't count them 1 by 1, but it seems like there are about 44 animals listed. Most animals that are larger than a hare seems to be there, but I just noticed...no Caracal or Wild cat

So apparently there are over 900 birds listed, and covers most of the birds found in Southern Africa, so if it's birds you are after Bush Baptist, then this will work for you too.

The other cool thing about this app is that if you click and hold on an animal or bird, it automatically opens up a wikipedia link that gives more information on the creature you just beheld. Of course you need internet coverage for this feature, but can be nice for campfire discussions.

Another app that seems great, but comes at a price is the Sasol ebirds app. It seems to be an electronic version of the traditional printed field guide, but it includes additional features like bird calls for over 600 birds. It's just over R200 and I think well worth it just for the bird calls even.

I might buy it soon and will give a report ASAP.

The Roberts is available as well. But as I'm not sure it'll run on Meamo I haven't bought it yet.
