We saw this little guy near Satara in March. I asked the forums for an ID and was told that it was a juvenile Martial Eagle, so hope that was correct!!

@ Leeukos: your photo from Malelane gate with the blue sky in the background is brilliant.

@ flying cheetah: excellant photos - funny the one without the head but even funnier the glance on the other one.

We saw three martial eagles along the S126 in April - two adults (to far away for a photo) and this juvenile:

Does anyone when the eyes start to turn yellowish? And does anyone know how to estimate the age of a juvenile?

Hi there. I took this picture in the Kruger last December and initially thought it was an immature Martial eagle but now I'm not sure. Looking in Newman's it appears to be a pale morph of a Wahlberg's eagle. Can anyone confirm this.Image I always thought Wahlberg's eagles were darker coloured. Bondm

No mistaking that one ... classic immature martial.

You should remember it being a huge bird ...

Definitely a Martial. The main characteristic here is the grey cere, Wahlberg's would have a yellow cere.

This juvenile Martial(?) was seen near Lower Sabie Camp on the road to Crocodile Bridge beginning July 2011. One of Krugers greatest eagles in my opinion!

I had an interesting sighting in the KTP recently when I saw a Martial Eagle in a small thorn bush breaking off branches to use as nesting material. Here the Martial flies off with the material. Must be a prickly nest and I hope they line it out with something soft. :D

Hi T

I am sure we saw the very same eagle building its nest. Was it between Kji Kji and Melkvlei?

I also have a picture on my trip report but unfortunately I didn't have the right lense because he was just too far.

Great shot.

There was a Martial Eagle around Dalkeith waterhole for a few days in May 2011 - gave nice photo opportunites like these:

Ever wondered how eagles are using their wings to turn and stay balanced?
