Hello Guys,

Im off for a 5night getaway to Shimuwini but I have to be honest I have never ventured too far past Olifants. Been to Letaba once before but was some time ago. The reason I am writing this is because all the info that I have read on the camp is about 2 or 3 years old, was hoping that some of the formites here have had a more recent experience of the camp and can give me good advice on where to drive, what the camp is like, where to go for breakfasts and whether a walk there is worthwhile?

Regards,

Schooms!

all i can say is drive the river loop road a lot. park at the view points long the river and wait. there is a resident leopard along that stretch of road. drive up to mooiplaas picnic spot and make breakfast there. hope you enjoy.

Matambeni hide north of Letaba is great.

Its horrible, dry and nothing to see at the moment around here, you should consider getting rid of the days there(to me)

But if you go, make sure you drive along the Ngwenyeni spruit, lively especially in Winter, if you have a hi-rise vehicle take the Mankavi road to the right just past the Letaba river to the lookout, and after you Brekkie at Mooiplaas you should do the Tropic of Capricorn loop.

If you lucky you might see the Mooiplaas Cheetah! And the tropic of Capricorn Loop is a mixture of Mopani and grassland. One of the top places to see rare antelope. If I were you that would be my main area of focus looking for game 8)

Thank you all so very much for your input. Sadly Scipio its my wife you would have to deal with and although she is petite, scares me too much.

M'wamba pan should be extremely high on your to-do list!
Tsessebe, roan, kori bustards, Pallid Harrier (Good tick!), tusker, secretary birds and more greeted our eyes while doing a 360.
And after that a drink on the deck in Mopani is always a good idea.

no 6 isn't too bad but i prefer no 10. but you will have a nice view over the river with no 6 and won't be too far from the hide.

I am North Jhb near krugersdorp - PTA highway, so I generally head straight up N1 to polokwane then Tzaneen, Gravellote onto Phalaborwa.find the roads more open and in better condition.

Oh from Joburg to Palaborwa
I would say hit Belfast, Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Ohrigstad, Hoedspruit, then straight towards Palaborwa gate.
The road has some bad patches but generally good. some very scenic views along the way
