Hi there everyone...(first time visitor on the forum)
My 15 yr old son and I are planning a first-time KNP North-South Trip for 9 days 18 Sept 2010 with a stop at a different camp each night.
We'll be staying in Safari tents and bungalows.
I know that campers are catered for, but will there be braai facilities at these camps that we can also use if we want to braai?

All bungalows and safari tents have individual braais — except at Punda Maria, where those staying in the bungalows share a communal braai area.
But if you are staying in a PM safari tent, you will have your own braai on the tent's deck.

Just a quick questions regarding facilities for Orpen and Talamati, where we have booked two nights at each. Do the bungalows at Orpen have braai facilities (either private or shared)?
We are in category BD2.
How about Talamati, where we are in a guest cottage (GC6)?
I tried to find out from the information given on the website, but couldn't determine.

Thanks so much for your help with this -- I'd hate to buy big steaks for a braai and then have to cook them on a stove top if not braai facilities are present!

No need to worry ... you will have your own braai at both Orpen and Talamati!

I want to go to the Kruger to escape city life, including mindless TV, but I have an only child who is 4 years old and hence gets bored easily.
Also I don't allow DSTV at home, so for her, its part of her holiday treat.
Is there any accommodation available in any of the more central camps that has limited DSTV.

Welcome to the forum.

I stand to be corrected, but the only DSTV you will find is in the Selati restaurant in Skukuza, the ladies bar in Berg-en-Dal as well as some of the other big camps.

I also know that some of the guest houses, like Franklin in Satara also has DSTV.

I am in the same situation with small kids and although I wish I could forbid any form of TV in Kruger, it does make life easier for the real young ones. We bought ours a small portable DVD player and a few DVD's which does the trick.

As far as I know only the more expensive guest houses have some limited TV .

Depending on the time of year you go many of the camps have lovely swimming pools where they can get rid of excess energy.

Another idea is to before your trip start getting together little odds and ends in the toy line, they needn't be expensive and then once in the park bring them out slowly one per day.

If you have a read Here I am sure you will find lots of good advice and ideas.

We have nights booked at Satara and Mopani in Bungalows BD2V and BD4.
They both have 'hotplate' listed as the cooking option.
I take it this is an electric element type cooker and it's not what you would class as a real BBQ or Braai.

My question is are there communal Braai facilities (wood or charcoal) available in these camps as we very much want to have a Braai each evening to truly appreciate the African experience?

Hi Swifty and welcome.
There are braai's at each cottage/bungalow in addition to the stove/hot plate.
It is also possible to buy everything you need from the camp shops (charcoal/wood/firelighters) to have a first class braai experience.

I've just managed to squeeze in a booking for the Easter weekend.
Will be staying at Lower Sabie in an EH2 hut and just wanted to find out if these huts have braai facilities or just the use of the communal kitchen.

All units have braai facilities.

Do braai facilities include tongs?

You may find tongs at accommodation units that supply utensils.
These are mostly the more expensive bungalows.
You have to bring your own if you are camping or staying in budget facilities like huts.

I am returning with my family in October.
I'd like to bring my small backpacking stove, which uses green disposable propane bottles.
In the US they are marketed as 16.4 ounce and internet searching tells me that 465gram bottles are available in Europe (same size metric/imperial units).

I seem to recall seeing these bottles in the camp stores, can anyone confirm this?
