Lionspoon,

Your first bird is certainly a juvenile Martial Eagle.

Wahlberg's Eagle?

Unread postby bondm » Sat Jun 04, 2011 3:40 pm

Hi there. I took this picture in the Kruger last December and initially thought it was an immature Martial eagle but now I'm not sure. Looking in Newman's it appears to be a pale morph of a Wahlberg's eagle. Can anyone confirm this.Image I always thought Wahlberg's eagles were darker coloured. Bondm

I would still go for a Martial.

Look at those claws and beak. Beautifull!

Definitely teenage Martial. :)

No mistaking that one ... classic immature martial.

You should remember it being a huge bird ...

Definitely a Martial. The main characteristic here is the grey cere, Wahlberg's would have a yellow cere.

 Immature martial. The brown speckles at the back of the neck is indicative.

Thanks for the ID SVR. Adult Martial eagles are quite easy to recognise but I can't seem to ID the youngsters. I've probably seen quite a few over the years but also ended up putting them down as 'not known'. Thankyou for the forum. bondm

This juvenile Martial(?) was seen near Lower Sabie Camp on the road to Crocodile Bridge beginning July 2011. One of Krugers greatest eagles in my opinion!

Hi T

I am sure we saw the very same eagle building its nest. Was it between Kji Kji and Melkvlei?

I also have a picture on my trip report but unfortunately I didn't have the right lense because he was just too far.

Great shot.
