Which side is more observant?

Unread postby Grantmissy » Tue Jan 04, 2011 7:31 am

It is sometimes the case in Kruger that the vehicle is occupied on both the driver and the passenger sides. In my case it is the passenger side that is more observant and who spots the most and more interesting sightings. What is quite amazing is that the passenger side is often without fail engaged in conversation though the most sightings come from that side. It is also that side that very often reads the map incorrectly due to what I think the continual conversation that is taking place. Could never figure out how it is possible. The driver is probably more alert to the goings on in the road. In your case which side is more observant?

Usually it is the side I am not on....unless I went with my dad.

As our eyesight is/was poor, we would rely on others spotting stuff that was not close to the roads.

What we have missed on our own I will never know, but we have has seriously great sightings on or near the road.

When we go into the park, if there is just 3 of us, like with Jock, we take turns to sit behind the driver, as I feel the driver has to pay attention to the road in order not to run over the small things chameleons, tortoises etc and cannot spot animals in the bush that easily, so one needs a good spotter on that side and hopefully, the front passenger will be as vigilant. 8)
If 4 of us, then we try and put the better spotter, ie not the one to fall asleep after lunch behind the driver!

With my family there is very seldom just the 2 of us!

For us it is the driver's side that sees the most (when I am driving 8) )
It is true the driver has to watch for game as well as watch the road. But my folks do not have sharp eyes anymore

I would say 60:40 favouring the passenger side. The driver will take credit for the last leopard sighting though ;-) Crossed the road from right to left, so couldn't exactly miss it

After our recent trip to Kruger I definitely think the driver side is more observant. I spotted the most! Perhaps the driver is more alert as the safety of others including the animals is of concern to him or her!

The side I'm on (the driver side 90% of the time). SO is improving, but my eyes are well trained for spotting, especially birds

I think the driver's side. My dad always drives in Kruger and he gets to spot all those things on the side of the road up ahead!!!

50/50....

But that said, I'm always in the back. That means we both have windows on both sides totally free.
The only problem I have is the headrest in fornt of me (loaned car, not going to damage it when removing) as well as the doorpost. So my getting half the sightings is actually amazing.

When I go with my wife, it is a no brainer. She isn't called 'Eagle Eyes' for nothing.

Mostly my side as im driving. SO and LO's tend to fall asleep quite often (although admitedly SO has had quite a few good sightings in her favour.)
