Skukuza deli seems to have stopped the traditional “bacon and eggs” breakfasts. Over the Easter period only a lunch time type menu was on offer. Why?

We always stopped at Skukuza for a late breakfast at some stage on our travels and it seemed popular with many others.

Is this the case with all the deli’s or is it only Skukuza.

Have asked that question a few times and , even back in the beginning of March, got the answer that they are "updating" the menu. :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:

Received word from Pedro Solipa, Operations Manager KNP Compass Game Park Services - KNP today

Quote:
Thank you for the enquiry and yes you are right that during the Easter period Skukuza, Satara and Lower Sabie were still not offering a smaller breakfast served from the Wooden Banana (Deli).

As of the 6th of May all our Wooden Bananas (deli’s) now serve the New Menu that includes a “Traditional Marula breakfast” at R29.90 with various add on options which will enable the customer to build the breakfast of choice at a price that suits his palate and pocket.

There are various choices on this new menu which will most definitely appeal to most dietary requirements and preferences

btw , i even have the new menu on file, but still have to figure out how to get a PDF on the forum.
Luckily mod Duco will help, our tech mod

Thanks Bert,

That's good news if "traditional" means eggs, bacon, etc.

Kiddies breakfasts?

On New Years Day we went to the restaurant at Shingwedzi for lunch.
We both order toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches.
After a wait of 45 minutes the food arrived.
The sandwich consisted of three slices of toast - cheese between first and second slice, and tomato between the second and third slice.
I went to query what this was, and was informed that is how they make toasted sandwiches in KNP.
The next day we stopped at Mopani for breakfast and people at the table next to us were having toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches.
They were made with two slices of bread as per normal toasted sandwiches.
At Letaba we went to the restaurant for lunch and ordered toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches.
Service was very quick, but the dreaded three slices of bread appeared.
This time it was even worse than Shingwedzi in that the outer two slices were toasted, but the inner slice was plain bread.

Has anyone experienced this new breed of toasted sandwich at other restaurants in the Park ?

Not in the park, but in restaurants outside of the park I have noticed lately my toasted sarmies have come in a '3'. Must be a new fashion for toasted sarmies?

Last few KNP trips we have also had the 3 slices type sandwich. I do not mind it though  bu it is a little weird

Hi WildThing,
I can see where you would question such a sandwich. I assume it had a decent amount of cheese and tomato in between. Here in NY, I once ordered a hamburger to go and when I opened the bag I had a bun with no meat. They forgot to put the meat in it.

Gosh WildThing, but you really love toasted cheese and tomato. 8)

Yes, I noticed this trend in the last few months - indeed odd; perhaps they're trying to make things unique for tourists to remember? :hmz:

On this variation theme (nothing to do with triple-decker toasted cheese, but worthy of mention as a new :breed" of food), I once ordered the health-breakfast at Letaba.
Stewed fruit (one of my favourite breakfast items) was on the list, but they didn't bring any.
When I queried this with the waitress, she confirmed that they didn't have - however, she seemed to have a baffled expression on her face at the same time she said this.
When I asked after the stewed-fruit situation with the manager, he seemed more than happy to assist me, although my request for stewed fruit prompted some discussion between him and the waitress in a language which I couldn't understand and with much gesticulation.

Nevertheless, he smiled at me after a few moments and said that the kitchen would be happy to make me some stewed fruit.
As the rest of my breakfast was already waiting, I ate as slowly as I could without the food getting too cold, and waited with anticipation at the arrival of the stewed fruit - which now had taken on the status of dessert. I finished my breakfast and waited patiently, the waitress assuring me that the welcome addition was almost ready.

Ten minutes later, they brought me my stewed fruit.
My girlfriend, my daughter and I were completely baffled by what we saw.
There, neatly aligned, like railway lines on an otherwise empty white plate, were two lengths of kebab skewers, each packed with pieces of melon, paw-paw, and apple.
I didn't say anything and proceeded to pluck each piece of fruit off the skewers in turn; however, we couldn't see the relationship between what had been presented and what had been requested.

Then my girlfriend had an epiphany that explained the strange "stewed fruit" perfectly: for some reason, despite being advertised, none of the kitchen staff seemed to know what stewed fruit was.
However, eager not to disappoint a tourist, someone must have interpreted my stewed-fruit request as ... "skewered fruit"!
We had a good giggle afterwards, but I never showed my surprise to any of the staff at what arrived - rather, I thanked them for their attention in solving my request to the best of their abilities.
After all, they did try.
