Ousus - the Elsa of SA!
After many trips to KTP I eventually got to see Ousus and the cubs she had at the time, it was in 2002. Then she was with a male called Scar I believe. I sent some photos to Oom Piet just to make sure it was her and he confirmed.
This was near Kwang and it was wonderful to see her...just a couple of the pics!

Hmmm..how on earth do you insert pics?

Hi All

I wanted to buy the book Ousus - The Lady of the Kalahari in May when we were on holiday but they didnt have any more copies at Mata Mata or Twee Rivieren.
Does anyone know how I can go about buying a copy of this book.

Many thanks
Sandals

Hi, Just been to the Kgalagadi and we came across this very old lioness - could this maybe be "Ousus" in her last days ? Can anyone tell me or send me Oom Piet Heyman's details to send him the photo's ?

Hey everyone! I'm sorry to have to say this, but unless you already have an Ousus book, you will not find it in the KTP shops. There was only a limited number of prints and it seems that Oom Piet does not see the need to have more printed. However, since my Grandpa  is such a softie...you can try to convince him otherwise. You can also send him some of your own Ousus pics, he will love to correspond with you!! We were lucky to buy a copy at Nossob 3 years ago!
Please tell your Grandpa he must make other copies for the ones who could not buy it so far. It is so good and so moving to browse through the good old Ousus days...

I bought my copy at Twee Rivieren back in 2003. I knew Oom Piet was in the park and I hoped to meet him so I could ask him to autograph my copy of the book. I eventually met up with him near Kousant as he was on his way out of the park. We chatted a while and he told me he had seen Ousus that morning near Polentswa. Unfortunately we didn't get to see Ousus during that stay.

Oom Piet was kind enough to autograph my copy of the book when we met so I now have a copy which reads: Geniet Ousus se wêreld (Enjoy Ousus's world), Heymans, 21/11/03, Kousant

In family terms "oom" means "uncle" however in this case addressing Piet as "Oom Piet" is a way of showing respect to an older person - the closest direct English translation I can think of may be "Elder Piet", although it is never used.

I bought my copy in 2007.

As far as I can remember it was a printer here in Upington that printed the book??

Yes, from what I remember it was a printer in Upington, Trans Oranje Drukkers. I remember going there on one of my trips with Oom Piet when I was 10. The book he gave me then was one of the first printed  and it reads Leer Ousus en haar wêreld ken (Learn to know Ousus and her world). Geniet dit, Oupa Piet (Enjoy it, Grandpa Piet)
