The white lions of Timbavati: Chris McBride

Unread postby Nungu » Mon Apr 11, 2011 9:52 am

Some people smoke or gamble... others consume excess amounts of alchohol. Some even run or exercise. Most mites are wildlife addicts - including me....

But, my worst addiction by far, is trolling second-hand bookstores. I spend exorbitant amounts of money and usually have to be dragged out of the store by my SO, kicking, scratching, screaming...and maybe a little crying...

This weekend was one of those where I found this little bookstore in Edenvale. Rummaged through stacks and stacks of books about almost anything and everything.

One of the jewels I found was by conservationist Chris McBride about the White Lions of Timbavati. He discovered these 2 white cubs in Timbavati born in 1975. As far as I understand the book is out of print (the copy I have was printed in 1978).

It is a very interesting, and so far, sad read. The plight of white lions in the wild is just that... interesting and sad at the same time. This book has now sparked my interest and latest pet-project... discovering as much as I can about the White Lions of Timbavati.

This book is indeed a "Golden Oldie"

The white lions are still around. We have spotted a couple of them in the Timbavati/Umbabat area about 3 weeks ago. Btw, old Chris McBride is still with us. I met him during a trip to Zambia a couple of years ago. He is operating a private lodge on the banks of the Kafue river.

Hi guys,

@FB - I bought it for R50 would you believe? It certainly is a Golden Oldie. The pics were printed from slides - but so interesting.

@Rooies - There was a project where they released an entire white gene pride into Timbavati in 2003. Apparently they are doing well and contrary to believe in the 70's, they have no trouble hunting etc.

@Cheetah2111 - With the dropping of the fences the tribes are free to roam into Kruger... but even in the 70's the local tribe's range ventured into Kruger - especially during winter... how they crossed the fence I don't know... but their main range is within the Timbavati Game Reserve. Although it doesn't stop new young males that are kicked out of a tribe to venture deeper into Kruger... this is part of what I'm still researching...

As Nungu said they were spotted in the Timbavati area. As the crow flies, about 5 km from the Kruger border.

Pleased to say that my dad still has the book, and another two by Chris McBride - Operation White Lion and Liontide. Looking forward to getting stuck into those. :)

Just returned from an amazing week at Chris and his wife Charlotte's lodge in Kafue, where I read all three books. Liontide is probably the best. An amazing man (and woman) and walking with them an incredible experience. Animal Planet has recently shot a film on the white lions - Chris was flown to the Timbavati to appear in it. Don't know when it was or will be aired.

As mentioned above, I have also met Chris and his wife at their camp. This place is as wild as you can get. (btw, how did you cope with the tsetse flies? He recommended that we use a mixture of Dettol and something else to ward off the flies. Can you remember what it was?)

Tsetse are only a problem in miombo woodland, not on the dambos and along the river, so did not really get bitten. Just a problem driving in. A mxiture of 50/50 dettol and water which you spray on yourself seems to help, others recommend avon skin so soft! It is stunning place.....
