We saw this pair from a loop on the H1-6 south of Shingwedzi in February. It was pouring with rain. Went back the next day in the hope of seeing them again in sunshine, but no luck of course!

Seen yesterday at the Kgomo-Kgomo floodplain. More photos in Stiffnecks outings report.

Not fair!

I really really want to see this bird.
I was going through some photos from my India trip (two years) earlier this week and came across a photo of a Painted Snipe! So I have actually seen one, but I can't tick it

Josh - I think this calls for a trip to Kgomo-Kgomo or Marievale at some stage soon
I have also never seen one of these and has been on my wishlist for ages.

On 2011/03/03 we found a male attending to 4 chicks on the Orpen dam road.
It was were the N'waswitsontso river crosses the road. Travelling from the Satara side they were on the right.

Unfortunately to far for a decent photo even for TG with the 500mm lens on his camera.

Seen at Ljiersdraai waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park on 3rd Jan this year.

@JenB - A first for us! Everyone we told about this sighting seemed very surprised, so yes, I think it is quite a spot for KTP! (Trevor also included it in his 'Rare Birds Report')

I got my best view ever of a Greater Painted Snipe while dipping on the Marievale Baillon's crake this morning.



This young female allowed full-frame views!

Rostratula benghalensis is unusual amongst birds because the female is larger and more brightly coloured than the male who incubates the couples eggs and takes care of the chicks after hatching. After completing laying of the clutch of around 4 eggs, the female goes on to find another male to mate with.
