Post subject: Storks: African Open-billed Stork

I’m busy sorting out photos and found this one we took in December – told JB about it and promised I will post (rather late than never, huh? :wink:

)

I can unfortunately not remember the exact spot where we saw this Stork. It must have been somewhere on the S90 or S41. Wasn’t at Gudzani – we have on previous occasions seen Open-billed Storks there.

This stork was alone and appeared to be sunbathing. (I apologize for the quality – really not a good photo :redface:

)

Saw one at N'wanetsi picnic spot in 2004.

I've seen about five feeding in the shallow waters from Shingwedzi. Openbilled Stork's are also seen soaring for long distance without expending unnecessary energy, this is done by making use of thermals.

Here in Cape Town ??? :shock:

Strange but true.
They have been popping up in the strangest of places and I managed to capture them on camera this evening. Five openbills arrived at our local little duck pond this evening at about 19h30 and I was ready and waiting with my camera.

Shocking quality photos but good enough to prove that they were not a figment of my imagination :wink:

I am not sure why they have strayed so far away from home..anybody have any ideas???

Went to Caracal's 'local duckpond' last night and saw the foreign five.

Maybe like Bryan Habana and Jacque Fourie, they heard of the great lifestyle here in the Cape!

In the experts books, there are no previous sightings south west of Bloem.

Sorry, but the pics are poor, because the birds arrived in the gathering gloom.
