Once the investigators have narrowed the origin of the fire to a small enough area, they can lay down something like an archaeological grid and start sifting through the debris. The top level of fire debris may need to be blown off to find the physical evidence beneath. This evidence might include the "puddled" burn patterns caused by an accelerant, or the remains of a cigarette.

Perhaps not very spoor related, but the info is good.

Let's get this thread back on track. First to post is IT.

Name three ways to distinguish between the spoor of a female and that of a male lion? (Please note, all three need not be true in all cases, but may give you a general indication.)

The male's tracks are a lot larger and broader than the female's.

The toes of the female are also more slender than the male's.

Due to the difference in max weight, the male's spoor will leave a deeper imprint vs the female's imprint.

Male lions spray-paint their territory, also tell-tale signs when following a spoor.

The male's tracks are a lot larger and broader than the female's. (Unless it is a young male.)

The toes of the female are also more slender than the male's. - Very difficult to judge, and related to the previous. But if you are good ...

Due to the difference in max weight, the male's spoor will leave a deeper imprint vs the female's imprint.

Male lions spray-paint their territory, also tell-tale signs when following a spoor.

Other possible answers:
- Female spoor will more regularly be associated with young and cubs. - Relative
- Centre pad shape differs. - Distinctive.

Elzet is IT.

Tx Imberbe. The pad, of course! I actually saw images of the pad differences when I conducted research, but forgot to mention.

I initially wanted to include that a female's spoor will more likely be found amongst other spoor (of the other pride members - cubs and sisters), like you pointed out, but then I thought your Q pertained more to that of a honeymoon couple, i.e. not associated with a pride over a number of days.

I've never tracked a lion, but I think you have. Is it possible that you might find a male lion's mane (a few hairs here and there) on trees with low branches? I've been thinking about this possibility too. I reiterate, not that I would know...

PS. Off to Kruger soon. Next to post is IT.

Ok, good to know.  Now I realise you are not a lion mind reader, but do they leave their mane on purpose (such as spray painting), or merely and purely accidental?

Bragging about what, Oom Boom? I have nothing to brag about. Now, if I had lion tracking experience, that would have given me something to brag about.

PS. Old habits die hard, I see. Or do you just like posting in blue? :)

Bragging about going to KNP!!!

I don't think they would intentionally leave their mane behind. But I'll try and ask next time!

Blue, who are blue?
