I have an old Kruger Map, it is in very good condition, and I am trying to establish which year it has been printed. Here are some clues:

1. It has a lion on the front cover and it has the emblem of "Rondalia Touring Club" on the cover;
2. At the back it has a Total garage advertisement;
3. It has been compiled by Map Studio Productions, and it is map 6 in their range;
4. The following sentence appears in the map: "Information from official maps reproduced under Government Printer's copyright authority number 4525 of 14th July 1971"
5. Another sentence: "The entire Kruger Park is open only during winter months, that is from the 1st of May to the 15th of October, but during the rest of the year only the portion south of the Letaba River".
6. There is no Pafuri gate, no Kruger gate, no Berg-en-Dal or any bush camps.
7. Punda Maria still spelled Punda Milia.
8. Nshawo resting spot is on the map.
9. Gorge picnic spot is not the map.
10. It feautures beautiful drawings of animals and birds.
11. No census of animal numbers indicated.

Sorry, that should be gorge picnic spot IS on map.

My guess - early 1970s.

I had a look at the map again but could not find a date on which it was published. The following appear on the map;
1 Lydenburg: population 1799 'Europeans'
2 Baberton : 1447
3 Nelspruit : 660
4 No Phalaborwa town
5 No Lower Sabie
6 No Olifants camp

As mentioned previously, it is a very big map. Approximately 2,5 X 2 metres and it is framed. The map is very brittle and I don't want to take the risk by removing the frame. I have tried various tricks with ordinary cameras to get a decent pic, but without success and will try and get a professional photographer to do the job. I simply have to show you the map. It appears that the railway lines were the principal mode of transport because the roads were marked with a thin brown line, but the railway track were marked with thick black lines. I 'relieved' the previous owners, a law firm in Bloemfontein which was founded in 1902, of their map.

Can the Phalagatte please tell me when their little outpost was proclaimed? And for that matter, when Olifants and Lower Sabie was built.
