No, it has to be done through the SANParks booking system. It is a very popular trail, so getting a booking can be tricky.

Hi Row_Hard
It is possible to look for cancellations at "http://www.sanparks.org/parks/garden_route/camps/storms_river/tourism/otter.php".
We got more than once places for up to 12 people that way. Just keep looking,if possible everey weekday, and as soon there is a cancellation, phone reservations at 012 428 9111
or 082-233-9111, Monday to Friday - 07:30 - 17:00 and Saturday - 08:00 - 13:00 (better than e-mail)
Hope it will help

Hi I see there are 3 places available for starting on 7 April 2011 - very near to the 10th you're looking for - and the Bloukrans crossing 4 days on, on 10 April, should be fine because low is at 13:43 - and Andre hut is +/- 2 hours from the crossing.
The 7th (imo) is a much better option than the 10th - starting on the 10th means you'll cross the Bloukrans on the 13th on which the 2 low tides are at 06:17 and 18:37 - making the crossing VERY awkward - for the 06:17 crossing, you'll have to start +/- 01:00 (ouch!!) or cross in the dark at 18:37 because sunset THAT day is 18:08, meaning - if all goes well, you'll get to the hut at close to 21:00 (ouch, ouch) being dark and all.
Hope you can do it sometime - a great trail - we are fortunate to do it (DV) on 2 May and again on 11 Oct.
Regards
Andrè

Hi,
my friend and I would love to do the otter trail in the middle/ end of May.

There is one unit available on May the 20th, but I'm not sure how to interpet this...

Does it mean, we can start on this day and there are places in the huts for the next three day even when there are no units available the days after? Or do I need to find 4 days available one after the other?

And do you know, if one unit is for two persons? I'm not sure, there is mentioned the base rat with max. 2 persons... Can I book one unit for two persons?

Do you think the weather will be alright in the end of May for this trail?

Thanks for help!!
Laura

I unit means there is place for 1 person .
There are 2 huts at each overnight stop , each can accomodate 6 persons on bunk beds .
If you have a booking for today for instance , tonight your group occupies the huts vacated by the group who started yesterday .

It's really so hectic to get a booking. I applied 14 months in advance and will only hear in October this year if we will be able to do the hike in September 2013.

One lady does all the bookings.

Her contact information is bridget.bagley@sanparks.org.

I wrote a blog about the research I did for this trail, this might help you a bit http://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/blog/the-otter-trail-overnight-hike-general-information/

Hi All,

I have one spare slot for the Otter Trail, leaving Friday 28/09/2012 to 02/10/2012. My wife and I going, but sadly my son broke his foot recently and cannot go. If anyone wants this slot, please call me on 083 378 0514.
