Please note "Eden".- a perfect place, highly pleasing, named in the 1930s, also by a man who truly cared. Maybe on a full moon evening he and wife Hilda may still often stand on the edge of Shirimantanga and watch over these plains of the place they just could not let go of.

Come February I also need to visit Shrimantanga - Shirima ntanga - Tsonga words meaning "tiller of the early garden in damp soil" - SKUKUZA was indeed a tiller of the early garden.

SKUKUZA - a corruption of the original ZULU - "sikhukuza "he who scrapes clean or level".

J.P. Junod an expert in the Tsonga language interpreted the name as originally having some bitterness by the Tsonga people who were the early inhabitants of the southern part of the Low-veld, of being deprived of their dwelling place by Col. Stevenson-Hamilton.

This attitude changed to one of goodwill when they started realizing that the KRUGER NATIONAL PARK became one of the biggest supplier of job opportunities close to their homes.

I bought a copy of this book at my local used book store. Will start reading it soon.

Should we not get hotels in Eden, much will remain the same.

Enjoy your reading.

I went browsing in my favourite second hand book shop recently. On a whim I went and asked the owner if they had a copy of "South African Eden". She told me that one had come in just before the weekend and she hoped that it was till there.

After a scrable through books piled on the floor, she came up with a brilliant, fairly well preserved copy from 1939. It had been donated to the Johannesburg library, the reference section, by Jan Smuts' grandaughter in memory of her brother.

What a find :D

I am having to be very discipline right now.. and late at night, as the book keeps calling me.

I have a 1952 edition (second). Got it from a staff member who worked at Shingwedzi in 1979. I shall have to have it rebound as it is starting to come apart slightly.
Yes, wonderful book.
